/pol/ should know, all these news reports out today are disingenuous as fuck. There has been research in the past suggesting similar dates using similar methods, but they are generally thought to be unreliable. Mostly because the dating method is unreliable as sediment within cave systems becomes mixed up and human fossils can end up in older sediment layers.

Actually dates range anywhere from 40 to 70,000 years but generally around 50-55 is thought to be the most likely.

THE NEWS REPORTS ARE POLITICAL, NOT SCIENTIFIC.

Same goes for people trying to say that Aboriginals didn't cause megafaunal extinctions. Fact is we will never know but its very unlikely they didn't play some part.

Yes, firestick farming is a fairly well established thing, not very controversial.

Aboriginal arrival, megafauna extinction and increased amounts of charcoal/ash from widespread bushfires all coincide quite closely in the geological record. Its a question of which came first. Megafauna could have gone extinct on their own somehow, more fuel-load as herbivore megafauna aren't eating = bigger bushfires.

What seems most likely tho is Aboriginals came, hunted the megafauna, started fires and this actually changed the climate of Australia fairly drastically.. all leading to megafauna extinction.
