The farmers should be fucked over anyways. They are literally paid not to plant shit, and then paid to turn corn into shitty fuel that costs everyone money. When the US corn subsidies went into place, it ruined all the Mexican corn farmers because they couldn't compete on price. Many of them simply switched to marijuana, poppies (opium) and other legal crops to which they sell to the US.

this exactly. as an iowan i can't wait to see corn go overseas. it requires mass subsidies which farmers abuse the shit out of (new 45k trucks every year), and it destroys the soil when it's not properly rotated with soy. our soil is grey dust anymore that won't even take fertilizer in some counties. most agriculture is better to outsource to poorer nations that can do it cheaper, and if you're going to do it yourself at least mechanize the shit out of everything and refuse to pay subsidies to farmers. america should be importing corn from south america at this point not exporting it.

Ethanol is corrosive and eats engines much faster. The US government has been trying to jumpstart the ethanol industry for a few decades now in the hopes that people will want to buy it.

Now they're kinda just forcing it onto people with minimum ethanol content in cars.

Thats just because it's alcohol - any type of alcohol would do that, and it's not hard to convert a fuel system to be able to use it (stainless steel, etc). Alcohol is actually a badass fuel, if any of you are familiar with the racing scene at all. The reason ethanol is shit is for other (((reasons))).

There are no alternatives for aluminum or iron engine blocks, stainless steel fuel system would be rather expensive, and rubber is rubber. These parts get corroded and wear out faster. We already have disposable cars, lets not make them trash after 50,000 miles.

E85 is about $1/gal cheaper than gasoline, but your car must be tuned to use it. You can't go from E85 one day to gas the next. The flexfuel vehicles are a marketing gimmick because the government again is trying to get people to buy ethanol.

The subsidies exist to prevent farmers from over-growing and destabilizing an economy heavily based in agriculture (1920s America). So this means two things:
>1. the total yield is currently at a lower amount than the possible yield
>2. the initial purpose of the subsidies is not necessary if the economy isn't largely based in agriculture
So I guess the real question is how big is the agricultural industry in comparison to the entire economy?
>pic related

You can't just magically grow other types of crops retard. If I were a farmer on the Midwest plains, I would grow corn, because corn is well suited for the environment. Apples require completely different tools and supplies to grow. Along side of that Argentina already has a massive foothold in the apple industry, as well as better land for growing apples. Mega farms have no interest in diversifying their crops, and would go broke if they attempted to do so. It's corn or nothing.

I'm saying the exact opposite! Im saying that subsidies are just a ticking time bomb that stifle.the free market! Now that they are in place, all we can do is sit back and wait for the farming market to go up in flames. Even if we remove the subsidises the farmers will destroy themselves with over production. There is no good solution.

a farmer recently grew edamame here in iowa and made 6x more per acre than he did with corn. the midwest is great for all kinds of crops, it's a crying shame they don't diversify more. instead they grow corn, it gets made into high fructose syrup, pumped into everything, and consumed in mass quantities making us all fat.

Pretty sure the reason soybeans are so high, is it's one of the crops that can grow on fairly marginal land. It's price also rose because all the faggot yuppies thinking it's healthy to eat.(Spoiler, soy is the absolute worst thing you can eat as a male, might as well go get your dick chopped off)

The stuff on that list is not too surprising. Compare acres farmed versus price, and you'll figure out pretty quick why they farm what they farm.

4 million acres of fruits and nuts is 2/3 the value of 73 million acres of soybeans.

Corn is super high on the list because it is HEAVILY subsidized, mostly to make ethanol for fuel. Which is the biggest scam to ever get through congress. It was pushed as an environmentally friendly way to combat climate change, and ends up creating more pollution than it could EVER save.
>>
>>134259421
>We will lose billions from this! You faggots better fix this!

We aren't gonna lose shit, boy. They'll still buy our corn. Just scare tactics,

We did just fine before nafta. Better. I was there.

>>Outsource farming
You're the retard.
>Thinks being at the mercy of a foreign government for our food is a good idea.
>>
>>134267021
Are you literally retarded?

Why would small family farms come back if a mega farm with economies of scale is unable to compete?

If there were a ton of small farmers, you're not going to get cheaper food, there will be more middlemen, which means higher prices, and not for the farmer.

This doesn't even touch on things like food security for the nation as a whole. You sound like a city cuck to be totally honest. You don't just "go get a job" in the middle of bum fuck nowhere, you either move to the city, and get assimilated into cultural marxism, or you farm, or you get lucky and live near some industrial shit that provides jobs.
>>

It is the only way dumbass, but it keeps us heading towards a cliff. My argument was consistent.
>>

What makes you think they would be able to grow corn as a competitive level as us? That they could even grow enough to replace what they currently buy from us?

It's hard to restart a dead industry.
If your farms have been dead for a decade and you lose all the skilled workers, equipment, infrastructure, etc. to support it, it will be difficult to rebuild.
Not counting the issues with storing food for a long time, you might not starve but the people won't be happy with eating conserved food for a long time.
>>
>>134273407
It would take a few years to just get to the levels of production that we need but it can be done, we are shutting down sugar mills and it has to be replaced with something really quick, the gov is doing everything possible to fuck the farmers over.
>>
>>134273280
Higher food prices are the best thing that can happen to a farmer. Just look at the 1890's and the shit that went down then.
>>
>>134272811

Sounds great. We'll let the beaners control our entire food supply so there'll be no more rednecks and you can sip your latte in peace.
>>

Yup, if you look into NAFTA it fucked the Mexican farmer thus fucking the American worker. Monsanto only grew thanks to this thus giving us gmo cancer food.

Soybeans are great for replenishing the soil though. You pretty much have to include them in a rotation to not destroy your land long-term and it also sells at an ok price.

>>134276593

Yeah bill clinton's presidency was a hundred years ago it's not like the displaced people from the trade deal are still alive or anything

do you think the people who worked in the corn sector when bill clinton was president are not only still available to do so, but willing (and able, not too old) and up-to-date enough to be competitive, given that they weren't competitive even back then? after years doing something else?
>>
>>134277101
Oh yeah, because soybeans are the only crop that does that and they also just happen to be the only other crop subsidized by our government. What a coincidence.

If the government is either going to subsidize soy or sub fertilizer, why not sub the thing that has an end value?

>Pretty sure the reason soybeans are so high, is it's one of the crops that can grow on fairly marginal land.

Pretty sure you're stupid. Soybeans actually require pretty good ground to grow. The Chinese tried to grow their own beans about a decade ago by planting them in shit soil. It didn't turn out for them.
>>
>>134280139
He's a moron like all the other faggots in this thread claiming to understand crop rotation. Most legumes are nitrogen fixing. The only reason anyone argues for soybeans is because of the fucking subsidy.

They grow the veggies in the California desert for a reason. The reason you ask? They don't have to fight the fucking bugs so much in the desert.

Not yet. More corn means more subsidy for domestic production and ethanol/gasohol development, meaning lower gas. Plus, Mexico is doing this despite NAFTA still being active. Would have happened anyway! Never tired of winning!

kek, fire up the ovens
>>
>>134280488
I don't know man, the Chinese love them some soy. And what we don't sell to them we can turn into biodiesel. Which is actually useful if not cost effective. The worst thing about soybeans is that while it puts nitrogen back in the soil it basically rapes it of cover leaving it vulnerable to erosion.
