Point in fact, while I have lived in the south all my life, understanding true "deep alpine slang", is somewhat of a chore, because instead of ~1/5 of all words being replaced with local variants, they use at least 2 to 3/5ths. Even northern "germans" are completely unable to understand it, because the intonation, words used and sentence structure, is - alltogether - vastly different, making it almost another language altogether.

If you're just going to learn a language for the hell of it, to better yourself, I would at least choose a language that's going to be extremely and widely useful, even if it's a much harder language to learn.

I mean as an English speaker you'd probably have an easy time learning German or Italian or Spanish but I don't think any of those would be particularly useful unless you plan to relocate to an area where those languages are heavily used. Personally I'd learn Chinese if I wanted something that would be incredibly useful; Hindi is in the same category although I hate Hindus so I wouldn't learn it.

Or I suppose if you just have a deep interest in a particular, smaller culture, you could make an argument in that regard as well. I mean if you just love German culture and society for example then I suppose it would be fair to learn German for that reason. Personally if I were rationalizing it that way I would learn Japanese or Korean, but that's for personal reasons of interest.

Trying to learn Portuguese, I'm worried about Duolingo's singular focus on Brazilian Portuguese.

I try to speak it to my Azorean grandmother but hat strange dialect now mixed with U.S. agricultural dialect makes it hilarious and impossible.

Yeah. Most people with a "home slang" (at least in the south), learn to specificly pronounce "offical high german", because it is needed for economic immigrants, and for the "good jobs" - you aren't really allowed to speak your slang in banks and the like, unless you really are out in the boondocks, with literally no-one safe the immigrants not speaking the slang. Falling back into the home-slang upon swearing or emotional excitement, even is kind of a meme here. (Well, people notice that their "high brow job" acquaintances, can't help but fall back on their "true language" if incensed.)

I thought by German "v" you meant the ones that are pronounced as a "w" in High German.
Vitamin in the south is pronounced "Fitamin", Valentin "Falentin".
Only Viktor is "Wiktor" because it would sound like a slang term for vagina.

I am learning German too. Incredibly easy to learn. I'm not sure about speaking it. I could read it or answer questions, but speaking it would be a challenge. The whole die, der, das thing is confusing when I speak it, but easy when I read. I started on Duolingo about three or so weeks ago and I'm 15% fluent already.
