I wouldn't care so much about the melting pot if Europe wasn't so fucked. The USA is basically doomed to be this nondescript nation full of people with indistinct identity just because of our location and demographics and history and government, so a kind of final amalgamation is pretty much inevitable here. It's not a surprise that Europe got better at science and technology as they got less religious. The "Byzantine world" was sitting on hundreds and thousands of year old knowledge and not doing anything with it.
