They've got literally half the upper body strength of men. You can tell where they've gone past the end of the source material. The screenwriters are dumb hacks who don't understand what made GRRM's work so compelling, which was re-examining fantasy tropes in the light of actual history.

Take Dany's storyline, for instance. A woman who fights like a man is going to look like a man, and generally be an unhappy person. It's poking a hole in the fantasy trope of the pretty girl who can fight as good as any man.

She says, "A Lannister always pays her debts." as she's failing to make a payment to the Iron Bank, inverting the meaning. It has not been done historically because war did not look like movies portray it .It wasnt this mass battle of swordsman using their skills on one on one battle .
It was literally front line wall of men vs a frontline wall of men,where mass and upper body strength were everything. And every one of those walls was as strong as its weakest link,so if a woman or several were there the formation would ve broken easily and its not them just dying there but the entire army is pierced and in a flanked position without possibility of reorganising aka instant defeat.That us also why cavalry was so powerful because a horse can overpower a man in such situation.

The Spartans, one of the most elite fighting forces the world has ever known followed in the Hoplite tradition and went home for harvest one week out of the month. So think about how impractical that was. During the Peloponnesian war they would fight and die to occupy Greek cities then they would go back home for a week and then come back and have to retake the cities they already had fought and died for. They did it because they knew how important the homefront is during war.

Somebody has to stay home and protect the homefront and it should be women. Of course there are outliers like Cyborg who could be a soldier and there's feminine men who shouldn't be sent to war, but for the most part men are suited for fighting the war abroad and women are suited for taking care of the homefront.

I don't think GRRM is really on the team. He's the author of the original books (which he's never going to finish, because he's super rich now, he's old, he enjoys eating more than working, and I suspect because he planned a big fuck-you ending for this shaggy dog story and doesn't want to deal with all the shit he'd get for going through with it).

They've changed some of this stuff in the TV version. That line I mentioned of Cersei's got cut, and she competently (though wickedly) disposes of her enemies in King's Landing (her part in the last book ended after her walk of shame, with her still surrounded by enemies, and with the Iron Bank beginning to financially support her more distant enemies). They hired a slightly plain but basically attractive woman for the role of Brienne, who should be a tragic brute. Last we saw of Dany in the books, she was shitting herself to death of cholera in the wilderness trying to crawl back to the slave city when she found one of her dragons (who is not obeying her) just before more Dothraki came across her. She didn't seem like she was about to suddenly get her act together and come to conquer the Seven Kingdoms with a rote-standard barbarian army, which is what's surely happening in the TV series.

Women are supposed to be at home, supporting the family, making sure the kids are fed and heads to school.
Not to mention that women are not reliable soldiers. There's a reason why Soviet disbanded the women battalion (that was mostly used to bolster the moral of male soldiers, but proved useless because the male soldiers didn't give a shit about women on the battlefield because hell was raining upon them daily) right after the war ended.

It's kind of funny though, the show is trying to push for "muh equality everyone should fight" and it ends up with what is known to be EVERYONE from 6-80 should pick up a spear and fight.

Not really, and particularly not upper body strength, which is what women especially lack. You could use both hands and get your hips into the pull. Also, there were "goat's foot" crossbows that you cocked with a lever. Crossbows weren't practically limited by the user's strength.

However, crossbows also weren't a good weapon for women (except perhaps in a siege situation). They were short-range and slow to reload, so you had to be prepared to fight with hand weapons after you got one or two shots off. To fight against longer-range archers in the open, you needed a heavy pavise (something between a shield and a portable wall), and you needed to be able to carry it into position in a hurry.

Really, you need something like rifles with cased ammunition before women start being useful on the battlefield. Otherwise, you're better off spending your resources on good equipment and supplies for your men.

Nobody is talking about aiming problems. But arrows simply arent very effective against mail and upwards. Its also one of the reasons the first crusade was a success. Bow and arrow pays off really well against light armor but to be effective against more than that it needs bows with a very high draw wheight that requires a lot of upper body strength. Obsidian's a common kind of stone, they just didn't have a reason to have a bunch of it to hand. They really ought to prioritize getting more of the stuff.

Anyway, it's pretty ridiculous that they talk about it as if they'd use general "fighting" skills and techniques to deal with the undead. That only works for people with magic swords. The rest is going to be obsidian arrowheads and setting shit on fire.
