From what I can tell from people who I've spoken to, it had mostly to do with the Franco loyalists and government associates killing people and then burying them in mass graves.

While I've been here there's been a few reports about new ones being found and while I visited the smaller villages they pointed out to where they found similar mass graves years later.

People who believe in a democratic republic today seem to denounce Fascism. Even to the point where only the 'rebels' AKA the losing side, are awarded with military benefits for having served in the civil war.

This however is not widely accepted as fair, as my friend stated that the way they see it, all of the participants who survived the war deserve benefits.

Take this with a grain of salt. My mother's side of the family is all Spanish. Almost everyone in her family and extended family except for her crazy bipolar sister are hardcore rightwingers. Her father served under Franco in what they call 'the good ol' days' unironically. They talk about how safe Madrid was. How she and her friends could walk around at night and literally nothing would happen. No mugging, rape, assaults of any kinds. The only people that were 'taken' were all harboring some kind of grudge against he government and/or importing commie shit from Cuba. They all have the unspoken rule of not trusting kikes and general dislike for jewery.

I don't really know what most normies in Spain think about him as I think my family probably holds an unpopular opinion of Franco.
