actually when FDR started the welfare state due to the great recession cira 1935 is when the age of entitlement began. After that the social discourse of the 1960/70's long with the technical isolationism of the Internet in the late 90's sealed what we have today. Supercilious information overload with nor real value or importance
>>

Yes, I do. I miss the world pre social media and the invasion of normalfags on the internet

>no instragram

>old /b/
>no "i'm so nerdy xDDDDDDD i browse facebook 2 hours a day!!!!!!!" bullshit

The thing is, if you were on the internet, you would spend most of your time on forums, discussing something or just funposting, with an alias. Not because you want to find a gf and make friends and shit, just because it's fun to you.. The normalfags think of every hobby as just another way of socializing. They aren't interested in anything, they just want to socialize. That' why, when nerd culture became popular(bbt), they flodded what they perceived as nerdy.

For the internet or the social/ political climate? I agree with you in terms of the internet being used as a means of networking, though I think a lot of the nostalgia is caused by a generational difference induced inability to understand what young people are interested in these days. Post French Revolution and the raise of liberal intellectualism is when I would say it went downhill in the social sphere.

IMO social media ruined internet. Back then internet was this strange cyber wasteland where nameless faceless users contacted each other every now and then. Nowadays internet is like real life with people using their real names and faces.

I liked it better when screen/nicknames were the standard. The only drama was when someone disagreed with their favorite video game on a forum, no real life consequences. Nowadays drama is someone having their nudes leaked, and someone ending up murdered in real life.

You must be young. The 80's was the best decade of my life. There was no such thing as 'political correctness' (there was but it was only a very very few people like at Berkeley because that school was always retarded). SJWs didn't exist and if anyone acted like the way they do today then they would immediately get thrown in a mental institution (because that is where they really do belong).

Music and most movies were so much better back then. Food tasted better. Everything was so much cheaper. In the early 80's in most places you could get a full meal under a $1.25.

There wasn't really any retarded political movements except the 'We Are The World' retards. Most movements like that wasn't even noticed much by the real world.

People weren't overly political back then either. You could like Reagan and your neighbor wouldn't but no one gave a damn because people back then knew that politics was bull shit.

About the only real worries the common American had back then was a possible nuclear war (and fags spreading AIDS) but we weren't really losing sleep over it. Some people were paranoid but most brushed it off.

It was a really awesome era to live in.
>>
>>134053111
It's not even the specific youtubers.

I miss the 90s.

I miss the ease of credit card fraud.

Hell you could order stuff and get it delivered before they found out the credit card number was fake. I ordered so much computer components to an abandon house on my block.

Trash diving at offices and apartments worked really well. Fucking credit card companies were sending pre approved cards to peoples houses, and they would throw them out or cut them up. Also credit card carbon copies.

Also that brief period when bluebeep worked for scamming pay phones.

Lack of computer knowledge by the general public was great. I was able to access my schools network drive via MSDOS and delete all records for students A-M.

The general level of stupidity back then was amusing. When a famous alarm company started installing new networked alarms in stores, they ran everything though an unlocked external box. that when the cable was disconnected, the alarm turned off. Easy way to get a few carloads of smokes.

Yes, it was the first interracial kiss.
Yes, original series was good.
Yes, TNG is the last good one in the franchise.
Yes, it was idealistic with unlimited resources eliminating the need for work and humans still striving for betterment and not becoming couch potatoes thus celebrating the human spirit.
Yes, after TNG they got severely progressive.

Much of progressiveness wasn't political but Rodenberry being a severely autismal idealist hell bent on his vision of the future. Elements of political discord in the federation, maquis and stuff was added to make the show appeal to wider audiences. Nah. In the 80s (DOS era) you still had some variety but even then the market was samey. Most genres were pretty defined and quite a lot of games even back then were the same shit with slightly different sprites and backstory.

We belong in space and on every world where we can carve out a home and make a living. Star Trek is religious fiction and political philosophy. The shows and movies are vehicles, nothing more.

Roddenberry' The Politics:

1. Humanity is a family. You don't fuck your family and you don't fuck your family over.

2. Moral obligation is important. Morally praiseworthy is dangerous.

3. Evil is a misperception of mental disturbance. The more profound the disturbance, the more harmful the coping mechanisms.

4. There will always be new challenges: problems we have to learn how to solve. Issues we have to learn how to resolve. People we have to learn how to help. Diseases we have to learn how to cure. Learning is fundamental.

5. Value difference, encourage similarity.

6. Contradictory principles produce energy when they interact. Channel the energy and create an ever improving society. Channel the energy and it will drive your ships to the stars.

7. Every ideology - Every Ideology - has value. All of them. And they all have faults. Maximize value. Minimize fault.

8. We aren't ready for utopia and to have space friends, and we never will be. You are never ready. Everything is a struggle. Mistakes are inevitable. Unity of purpose matters. Calm the fuck down, take your bearings, fixate on a star, and fucking go there.

9. But first: Eugenics Wars & extensive nuclear holocaust: WWIII. After that, then we learn how to live. You can't learn how to live without learning how to die.

What? Consoles were always for normies, but it became particularly bad after the SNES, because PC gaming pulled so ridiculously far ahead in the early to mid-90s. The fact that you're talking about Halo 2, which is the definition of a normie franchise that helped kill the FPS, speaks volumes. You were the normie, and you don't even realize it.

It's odd how nostalgia clouds people's judgment.

Pretty much. Rodenberry truly believed in all good things that humanity has to offer and the we, as a species, will eventually pull our heads out of our arses and go boldly into a bright future and stop with petty squabbling and crap that makes most of today's news. And he believed in human spirit overcoming adversity which is polar opposite of SJW crowd who want immediate results without struggling and working for them.

This is in part why we're in such a bad spot. The loser generations that came before Gen Y and Z, the Boomers and their children neglected their duty to maintain their nation and failed to take politics and statecraft seriously. The 1980s was an era of flagrant drug abuse, cross dressing, fast sex and pure irresponsibility. This, normies don't actually have any idea of what they themselves enjoy, they require other people to be involved before they say they enjoy things, doing anything solo is considered sad and a waste of time. Examples;

>Jumping around in the mud
Alone = retarded and stupid, but with lots of people at a festival it is now 'Best time of my life xD'

>Comedy shows on TV
Great example with this, they only will laugh at jokes that they know other people they also know will be able to reference, the fun for them is not the joke but more knowing that everyone else they know is watching the same thing, this is especially true with garbage like 'It's always Sunny' where each episode is based around little 'quirky' things that are picked up upon.

>Superhero movies
See above pretty much, with the addition of being able to claim they're 'Nerdy' on social media and of course going to see the movie with people IRL.

The list is endless!

True. If you follow back on my posts you will see that I said that even about the 80s gaming. That's why really good and innovative games like world of goo made by 2 guys in a shed always pop out. They bring something new. I had more fun in DOS playing the lost vikings than with any of the relatively new games. Even the great franchises got shat on them. Compare fallout 1 and 2 with fallout tactics or every fallout after it (oblivion with fallout textures).

Yes, there were pay to play mmos pre wow. But in general mmos were much less restrictive and regulated, and the players usually made the rules (which led to lvl 2 newbies getting ass fucked by lvl 66s, just like in the real world). The mmos were more of the "it is what you make it" kind.
Maybe you want to get good, join the strongest guilds and dominate? Better get into the politics in the game and make friends and get connected. Maybe you want to RP and socialize? Maybe you want to just cause mayhem and fuck shit up? There was room for that too.

I have an old Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012. I find smartphones to be quite practical, though I don't get the whole culture that surrounds them, and I never really use it as an entertainment device. Surfing on a phone is a fucking nightmare, and I don't use social media.

I just like having it in my pocket, because it's practical to have a combined phone/camera/music player/computer with internet access.

How the fuck can it be our fault? I was 6 years old when my country went Default in 2001 and 13 yo when 2008 crisis hit.

How ignorant of history do you have to be to think things only started going downhill in the 2000s? Western civilization has been in decline since before anyone living today was born. The fact that you enjoyed some video games and TV shows back in the late 90s/early 2000s does not prove everything was ok. Stop being your political opinions on nostalgia for your childhood or teenage years.

i was a computer nerd in the mid mid 2000s. One thing that's changed drastically compared to then is how socially competent nerds were back then.

Me and my friends would have lan parties and play board games and all that shit but we also went to parties, had girlfriends and very active social lives and mingled with the other cliques of society.

Todays "nerds" seem to be complete social failures, have little to no social lives, spend all their time indoors and are all borderline autistic. I don't understand how it changed so drastically

Yes I can. I can look at myself living in a bubble and decide I won't use the war I experienced as a child for an excuse. And then I can look at my dad and blame him too. We both made the same mistake of thinking that politicians will take care of things. Dumb? Yes. Being a general after the battle? Yes. I accept my blame for the current situation. I sure as hell can put that same blame on others.

>>134073329
Forgot, once you were old enough to get your dick wet, you were old enough to get interested in politics and maybe do something to try and stop today's BS. Man up. The way things are today didn't come overnight. And both of us could have done something 5 years ago. We didn't.

welcome to Ubuntu Mate.

My UI (in my opinion) doesn't look like a faggy cartoon.

You see, with Windows and Mac, they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator, in order to maximize sales. Linux cares naught about who uses it. Thus you can make it look however you like. You could even emulate that old Apple UI.

GNOME 3 and KDE are cancer for this reason alone.
They make a UI that requires new hardware to run, but why? Microsoft does this so people have to buy Licensed "Microsoft Certified" hardware in order to run their latest software, but FOSS developers get nothing from hardware sales, so why bother doing anything flashy at all?
