Indecision and deadlock mostly. As far as republics and democracies go, you can get too big, too divided, and too violent to accomplish anything. What advancement happens? What good occurs? The pendulum swings back and everything is undone on the whims of a majority that decides to fuck it all.

Left or Right, everyone doesn't giv a shit about the well being of the country, so long as they get theirs. Take a ruler who feels like they must make their country sucessful and has the power to do it and we might just have something better. By "changing the country" you mean campaigning and persuading your fellow countrymen. That stability is much more preferable than "changing one person" by violent means, especially when every single nig also has the same idea.
