To talk about Japan we have to go back to the tokogawa shogunate, the last shogunate. The tokogawa shogunate had sakoku law, which dictated that any foreigner caught on japanese coasts or shores was to be executed with extreme prejudice. This lasted until the 1850's when America forced Japan to open it's ports and imposed unequal trade treaties on Japan at the threat of military action. Japan saw the way the wind blew and westernised quickly, occupying korea and imposing their own unequal trade treaties on China.

Then comes WWI, Japan joins the allies, but is forced to give territorial concessions to Russia after the war, despite it's efforts for the allies.

The League of nations is formed after WWI and Japan is a founding member, Japan submitted a bill to the league of nations which stated that Japanese had racial equslity with Europeans and Americans. Australia and America objected, and the bill was vetoed. Japan was outraged, and this outrage set them on the course of nationalism.

Japan attacked china, left league of nations, joined axis and eventually attacked america. We all know how the war ended. America wanted to turn japan into an ally against the USSR, so they pinned all the blame for the war on Tojo, the PM, and absolved hirohito.

Japanese still had the sense of patriotism and nationalism, largely caused by the 200 years of complete isolation they experienced before the americans opened their ports.

They also have a sense of superiority because they were the only great power in Asia in the 19th century, and are much more civilised than most east asian countries.
