The thing is, hell isn't there to scare you into being with God, it's there because sin is punishable by death of the soul. Personally I don't believe hell is eternal punishment, but rather an extinction point for souls. You are punished, then you're gone. It depends on your beliefs, but there are three theories: hell is eternal punishment, it is punishment then death, or it is punishment then ascension. All three have very valid pieces of evidence in the Bible.

The God of the Hebrew and Christian Bible did some things that our conscience tells us were "evil." But in the pursuit of Law over Chaos, which is God's bread and butter, there is no good or evil. There is only action, with no question of moral judgment.

The implication of "...better to go into life maimed than having two hands, to go into hell..." is that the "hell" of which the writer speaks is here on Earth, where the choice seems to be to live life with both hands but be in the "hell" that is constituted merely by spiritual separation from God.

When I say Hell is not mentioned in the Bible, what I mean is the "Hell" that people have created over the centuries featuring demons, flames, and Satan himself.
