They're always trying new things, its doubtful they'll ever find the holy grail of antigravity however, the original flying saucer concept was developed during WW2 and improved upon somewhat there after. Unless they mastered high altitude flight there's no way they could move at such speed in atmosphere. Elevating something of that shape that high into the atmosphere can't be done without a secondary boost vehicle.
