Survived, just remember to adapt. Don't stay with what you know if you are going broke. Go straight commission, sell drugs, do anything to stay alive.

I was in highschool during that time, but I began applying for part time jobs shortly after the recession, 2011 - now. Shits terrible, almost nobody in town ever hires anyone new. I'm on my two weeks notice at my current job because they are a small mom and pop store and can't keep up the payroll. Im probably just going to be a full time student here on out.

Greentext story

>Graduated from engineering in 2008
>Recession hits and everything goes completely belly up
>No jobs anywhere, government job I was set to get disappears due to hiring freeze
>End up on the dole for a bit
>Have to move back in with parents
>Work at a shit job for one year
>Move abroad (Leafland) and manage to get work experience as an engineer
>Move back home and take masters in engineering
>Economy has picked up and now gainfully employed

To anyone out there who feels completely hopeless in the economy right now, hang in there. I know what it is like to feel like you have done everything you are supposed to do to get a job but are still hung out to dry. Don't ever feel like any job is beneath you when these times come. It taught me a very valuable life lesson and I am incredibly meticulous with my money now. I do not trust Irish banks and never will. Oddly enough the Canadian banking system is much more secure due to some government backing it has on accounts so I still manage to maintain some of my saved income there. I also refuse to go into debt at all, including a mortgage.

The merchant is truly heartless and will take everything it can from you.

I'd been listening to people like peter schiff since early 2000's and when bear sterns went to shit I moved to all cash, as did most of my family.

When the market crashed I averaged down to get back in.

My one fucking regret was not buying ford when it was around a dollar a share. That fucking retarded Chris Dodd kept talking about nationalizing the car companies so I didn't pull the trigger on that. Oh well.
>>

If you have an engineering degree you'd likely be sorted at this point. There has been a lot of companies expanding and if you are willing to move anywhere in the south for work you'll be fine. I'm currently at a plant in Cork and it was easy enough to get on. Be wise about it and look into whether you can save money or not. Forget about buying a house though, it is headed for another bubble. We are repeating the same mistakes as before, and the banks are already back to throwing out loans to anyone.

You probably need an IQ of at least 115 to know how to handle yourself in the stock market at the most basic level (like not selling during a crash if you don't have to, and not buying at record high prices). They're better suited to buying real property and perhaps starting a small business.

Now imagine if all of a sudden the country responsible for running those pumps got most of its infrastructure wiped out by the country next door, who also runs its own pumps and had its infrastructure knocked out. Made a lot of money both ways in 2008. Trading was insanely good in 2008. And then I bought everything pennies on the dollar. Too bad I sold everything a few years ago. Hopefully we crash again. The same stupid fucks determine the US economic policy with no tweaks. The next one will be even worse. In 2008 it was just banking fraud. Now it's government fraud. The fall out will be bigger and government will be incapacitated. On the downside there will be massive seizures to pay for government budget, so I don't want to be here when fall out happens.

>Decide to eat shit and start working as a barista at a trendy coffee shop

>Working with qt3.14 18 year old girls all day
>Sold car, ride bike everywhere to save more money and stay healthy
>Improve people skills due to talking to people all day every fucking day, flirt with milfs, try to make the most of it
>Rapidly promoted to store supervisor in a few months since everyone else is lazy/stupid/liberal arts major
>Spend as much time chatting up successful people, give them free coffee, make some connections, grill them on what they look for when hiring entry level shitheads like me
>Use spare time to research, study and learn as much about current marketing tech/lingo/agencies etc..
>Use what I've learned and make up a fake marketing company and mix it into my resume along with other half truths
>Apply to jobs every single day
>Do well in interviews because of constant human interaction
>Get an entry level, 1099 contract position with a very small marketing firm
>Work my way up to a nice position at an established international agency
>Hate every day of it and show my penis to the company president at the holiday party
>Currently co-founder of a successful company I'm proud of and don't have to eat shit anymore

Move to Ireland. With your level of education you will find something in your field to get your experience up. You can then move back to the USA and get in with a higher paying/lower taxed job. Also try joining engineering networking groups, going to engineering presentations at local schools, engineering expos that are in your area, anything you can to meet people in the industry. Look presentable. Don't be afraid to make the first move and shake some hands. Being nervous and shaking a hand is better than standing there with your hands in your pockets, leaving the place and wondering what could have happened.

Yes. I worked in a retirement community for a few years. Got some advice and my resume reviewed a view times while I was there. You can't make a lack of experience look good. There's nothing to spin.

I also recently volunteered/worked on a local political campaign, and handed out a few of my resumes, but it got me nowhere besides being offered the same work for less money. I also ended up feeling rather disgusted by my local GOP. The campaign was run by a very snooty Log Cabin Republican that made lots of petty and demeaning jokes about some of our supporters. Lots of stuck up Young Republicans too. I mostly did canvassing work, so I was a wreck my first day, but I outperformed a lot of my peers the rest of the days I worked after developed my own method.

Burgers generally don't get it. They have sophisticated explanations why it was some political decision or Fannie and Freddie. Not that banks just sold mortgages given to cats to "investors" as AAA rated bonds. As soon as houses stopped going up, everyone strategically defaulted, and because banks shorted the shit they sold to investors, the particularly bad pools of mortgages were magnified to unknown proportions, because some pools were sold short a few times over. Shit goes to zero in days. Everyone blames poor people and niggers. Not a single banks writing fraudulent MBS as AAA bonds gets punished. Rinse, repeat. Now they seriously consider privatizing the entire housing market to the same banks who looted it before 2008. Sadly it's the state of US education.

We germans had a "birth-boomer" period at that time, which means that while we the recession didn't hit us as bad overall, we had several tens of thousands of young people, who didn't get an apprenticeship straight out of school. I was among them, did a year as a state-paid intern (200€ a month - even unemployment pays better), and then was given an apprenticeship by the firm I worked at. Afterwards, we got into buisness again, and I was able to gain steady employment.

litterly dumpster dived for food, lived in country so what food I scavenged from behind grocery stores that was inedible I could feed to pigs so I could fatten them up for slaughter. God bless the inventor of deep freezers, also I'm not too bad with a knife now.

You know the dull-sounding English voice on those English textbook's cds that no one ever plays? That's my job. It's magical.

I have no idea. I just kind of made myself useful.

I survived gradual automation, 85% of my co-workers being laid off and even my supervisor being shitcanned for 'not being assertive enough'. And then they hired on a mentally disturbed supervisor from Citi because he had a reputation for being an asskicker. He wanted to break us with mandatory OT but most of us were actually THRILLED to be able to work it. Which enraged him because he hated people smiling if he wasn't having one of his good phases. (If he was miserable you'd better look miserable too.) Finally the fuckin' bi-polar ogre destroyed his ankle getting out of his SUV because his excessive weight crushed it. And he had to quit.

Millenialfag here. I had just started an apprenticeship working for my dad in drywall mudding. He's an oldschool fucker who started to redpill me before that was even a thing. He's stayed busy and sought-after his whole career by way of hard work, quality, reputation and personability. He taught me all that shit and reminded me often that those were the reasons we still had work and weren't living in our cars like a whole lot of other loser drywallers. Basically he taught me not to be a millenial before I even knew what that was. Now I kick ass and shake my fucking head when I look at the rest of my generation, especially their work ethic. Slowest walkers I've ever fucking seen.

Worked for guys in construction that lost or almost lost very successful businesses during 08-09. Some recovered and are doing great others EVERYTHING and became junkies or alcoholics. Made me want to get a city job for the guarantees pay check every 2 weeks plus benefits and have a small business on the side.

base pay went from 55 - 75K between 2008 and 2013, keeps going up. Job shopping and being a competent white man is really swell.

Kept my hand on the mouse working.
Made ~72k when it happened.
Up to 140k now.
It was good to purge the weak and helpless. Helped me in the end.

We didn't feel the recession in Texas. Shit sucked whenever the price of oil dumped in the past few years, though.

Bought 8 housing units in 2004 for 80,000 each on credit.

Resold 7 of them for a average of 120,000
Paid off the note on the remaining house plus about 150k after getting jewed on fees and so on.

Live in Florida for 2 years in my paid off unit till some friends in Ven. needed a place to stay. They show up and dad is working at a hardware store, We came to a agreeable rent that was below market value but I know the family and they will keep it up.

Moved to the midwest were rent is cheaper then dirt.

>How did YOU survive the 2008 mega-recession?
Properly diversified investment portfolio. Yes, still lost some value but it was nowhere near what everyone else lost.
Also choosing investments that have a well planned program for getting out if everyone goes to shit helps.

Find someone to manage your investments and who will listen to you when directing where and how you want to invest but also be open minded when they give you advice.
