90% of the murders and other major crimes occur in maybe 5% of the country. A state like Vermont that is 96% white has lower crime rates than any country in Europe, and the white areas outside of big cities are pretty similar.

Use a tool like LexisNexis Community Crime Map and you can see exactly the neighborhoods to avoid. The police department of every big city will have a link to some sort of mapping tool like this.
