Its no surprise the US homeless population exploded after, in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, our mental health system of asylums were dismantled. For sure, some asylums were terrible places, but we actually had a system to take the mentally ill, and it was a system we could have expanded and changed.

Instead, we got rid of it, and around 30% of homeless people are mentally ill, with something like 50% having had problems in the past.

Nixon and Reagan treated drugs like a criminal issue when it needed to be a mental health, public health, and public safety issue. We flooded our prisons with drug users, and we have so damn many that many places give lenient sentences out for EVERYTHING now because they don't have any room. I'm talking places like Chicago giving lenient sentences for burglary and assault, simply because their prisons are full to the brim of drug users.

This problem is killing our institutions.
