I think it's unfortunate really, sexual reassignment surgery is probably something that ought to go away because I'm right with Gavin Mcinnes on this one, the suicide rates are brutal. I mean they're pretty bad with trans people anyway, but the evidence does point to them going up, and a fairly high rate of regret afterwards.

Mental health is partly regulated by other people in society (watch Jordan Peterson on this) and while reassignment surgery attempts to fix a trans persons perception of themself (and generally fails) it causes a greater conflict within broader society, especially when dating and having intimate relationships.

My understanding is that the differences are hard to spot, MRIs and scans of the brain do actually show differences but it's not as obvious until later maturity. Although as medicine advances it's probably something we could test for. I think hormonal studies of the baby in utero are possible (Baron Cohen et al) as they tracked and correlated testosterone exposure in utero with the adults later in life and there is good correlation between male traits and testosterone exposure in both males and female.

You can live without hormones but the underlying disconnect between your brain structure and your chemical balance causes a lot of mental stress and that leads to depression and other mental disorders, which along with social bullying can lead to suicide.
