Macron wants to "reform" the EU with France at its center instead of Germany. He'll use Trump and the US as leverage against Merkel. Trump's enemies have the power to install wiretaps and read e-mails. They've also probably interviewed everyone who has ever talked to Trump. They don't need someone like Macron to feel him out. They already know what Trump is about.

Macron is doing this because he knows that Trump will win and so he wins by being Trump's friend.

Macron is a brand new person in European politics and that would usually see him relegated to the "kids table" with all the other first-timers. Now who can treat him like a kid in Europe? Most of them have burned their bridges with Trump and must now approach Macron to put in a good word on their behalf if they want to deal with America.

Most importantly, Macron did something very funny and smart: he tried to steal American scientists after Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate Treaty with a cheeky video (Macron speaks English) imploring Americans to come to France to conduct their research if they disagree with the President. He also had the tough handshake with Trump when he first met him. In other words, he's a direct man and competitor and that sort of thing makes Trump respect and trust someone because Trump is a businessman. He wants to steal your researchers and crush your hand too.

They will be very good friends.

Trump is happy to let Macron attempt to "reform" the EU with France at its helm. Merkel's position is weakening, so Macron is likely to have some success taking Germany out. However, Trump probably realizes that Macron will destroy himself in the process.

Unless France and Germany are able to replace Macron and Merkel with powerful successors, Trump will have succeeded in cutting two pro-EU heads off the European hydra. The hope is that this will leave France and Germany relatively weakened in their bids to lead the EU, and with the UK on the way out (barring any more fuckups by May), there will be no major guiding power within the EU power structure.

Macron wants a neo-French Empire with himself firmly at the head of a strong imperial presidency like is found in the United States. The problem is that his government doesn't have anywhere near as much popularity as it needs to make that happen until he engineers some crisis - likely using terrorism and spooky brown migrants - to rally the frogs behind and use as an excuse to boost executive power just like our executive branch here has.

Macron is a classic Bonapartist.
