If this is true, I pity the rest of the world. The NHS is fucking awful, in my experience with it. I remember once I was attacked by two morons and beaten until I was nearly unconscious. I was appalled with how long it took for me to see a doctor in the A&E and how fucking cavalier they seemed about the whole thing. That's just one experience. I could write a fucking book about the five years of shitty service and indifference I have had to put up with since I started being treated for mental illness.

The government hates the NHS and the people who pay the politicians see it for the money it could make them. They have been gutting it for some time (Hunt has capped junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals pay, and removed undergrad course funding). Our medical professionals old and new are leaving to better paying countries.

The government here has long sought to reduce the capacity of the NHS.
