why do religions suck so bad and why are people still believing in these fairytales?
>>
>>133604140
Humans have to believe in something. Being religious does not make you dumb; just as being an atheist does not make you Stephen Hawking. Stand for something or fall for anything.
What do you believe in, Hans?
>>
>>133604140
They don't. Religions impose social rules onto society that, contrary to rules laid down by the government, cannot be challenged because they come from a higher authority that is beyond questioning.

That they slow down positive progress too is a side effect of that. But nothing in life is 100% perfect with no downsides. And if you're looking at your country right now you'll have to ask yourself if losing that higher authority, whichever it might have been, was really such a good thing.

>>
>>133604140
Societies need rules to follow. Be it a religion, or National Socialism, or something else, they will collapse without them. Religion is no longer the only option but still viable.
>>
>>133604470
So you wanna talk about how it is proven that blacks are statistically more criminals and have a lower IQ? that's ok

Galileo's fate was actually house arrest, he lived out the rest of his life in relative dignity able to observe the stars and take notes which are no doubt stored in the catacombs beneath Vatican City.

But to answer your question; for the same reason Christianity became the dominant faith among whites, I mean, to restrict things to my own cultural heritage and experience. In the Iron Age religion was the tool of early statists, they used the unified faith of a nation and the Roman-invented "divine right of kings" to bolster the state and rule however benefited their royal family. That's why, to this day, the British people treat the interests and values of the British royal family as their own - because that's really how it was and how it worked.

This is why leftist identitaranism is so fundamentally dissapointing, this is why I am here now. They're acting like a religion who's tithe is activism and who's sacraments are self-hatred and nihilism.

Really sad to see you Engineers die this way. What could you have invented had the muslim hordes not blown you away for good like so many Bahmiyan Buddhas at some point between 2025 and 2040? Better make sure that Reichstag building has charged fire-exitinguishers!

Also, I don't think nukes are the worse thing science ever invented, it just was an easy symbol.

Well I'd like to point out the nuke's only military use thus-far prevented more deaths than it caused. Operation Downfall was already planned and would have probably doubled the overall casualty figure of WW2 had it happened. The nuke did what it was actually built to do and the genie that escaped the bottle thereafter is honestly the responsibility of western security and geopolitics. Nobody expected communist theievery.

On that note have you ever asked yourself the question "Why does Israel have nukes?". I mean, obviously Palestine doesn't have them but Israel basically has them by default. Why? I think researching the answer would be an enlightening experience for you.

>>133607299

>Francis is trying to position the Catholic faith for mainstream inclusion because they want to save the maximum amount of human souls

It's almost like it's a religion or something.

>>133607449

Haha, I actually have medical expertise and it's the opinion of my fellows that a true cure for cancer would be akin to immortality. It would require such control of the cell that immortality would be just a trivial flipping of switches at that point. Our "thousand diseases, thousand doctors" approach is sadly more realistic if incredibly pendulous and bordering on inhuman. All we can do is target the structural weaknesses of various constructions of cancer, not cancer itself, not really, not beyond blasting it and also you with piss.

But seriously you're asking us to solve a potentially infinite set. Do I look like I'm made of teraflops? Shit costs money.
>>
When I look around I see maybe 1 in 20 atheists who I believe actually thought the thing through. The rest just seems to have replaced religion with something else like ecology, climate, social justice, singularity or whatever. Same irrationality, same obsession, same blame everything on the unbelievers. Fuck that.

read last phrase of this post I made >>133607204. I realize that the choice of nukes as an illustration wasn't the best opition.
But still, the fact that humans through science acquired the power to destroy our planet, I'm not sure it's such a great thing.

>>133608881
>But seriously you're asking us to solve a potentially infinite set.
I'm not, I don't care for a cure for cancer (even though I'm a heavy smoker). The point of most of my posts was that science has no moral high ground on religion.

Also, we shouldn't thrive for constant progress. Societies need time to digest progress, whether it's scientific or social.

Francis is a *literal* head of one of the most popular world religions - and a hierarchic religion that owes him total obedience in religious matters it is.

Dawkins is neither a medical doctor nor a head of science or any branch of science.

No it hasn't. It's a small percentage compared to much more dominant factors. And there's still disagreement as to how much of a percentage we contribute.

Way more dominant factors are sun cycles and cloud coverage percentage.
>>
>>133604371
>They don't. Religions impose social rules onto society that, contrary to rules laid down by the government, cannot be challenged because they come from a higher authority that is beyond questioning.

This is utter bullshit. Rules laid down in scripture are something that would get >99% of the population of this board sentenced to death. And since the more draconic rules haven't been adhered to for a long, long time by any of the religious people, they are NOT beyond questioning, and the consensus to overlook the parts of the Bible people found inconvenient did NOT come from any higher authority... so what benefit is there in them?

tl;dr - religious ethics are a product of the society that gave birth to the religion in question, and are subject to change when the society itself changes, only a bit slower.

Science really is just a formal representation of acquired expertise which belongs to no one but chooses to mostly collaborate to promote itself in the hopes the end result solves more problems than it creates. Largely, it has done this. People mostly ask good things of the oracle because people are mostly good.

Also, as for a moral high-ground it doesn't need one. You're again assigning identity to a machine which you ultimately control. Require time they do but the conflict with communalism leaves little time for this. Science is the end prize, end the commies and the jewel is yours to control. As a scientist I say this because capitalism pays better but as a man I say please destroy these identitarian lesbian cyborg mao zedong ultrafaggots before I have to spend half my life analyzing their matriarchal economy vaginal discharges and I feel this image reflects my feelings on that particular detail.

'Having been admonished by this Holy Office [the Inquisition] entirely to abandon the false opinion that the Sun was the center of the universe and immovable, and that the Earth was not the center of the same and that it moved... I abjure with a sincere heart and unfeigned faith, I curse and detest the said errors and heresies, and generally all and every error and sect contrary to the Holy Catholic Church."
