Why do you faggots want so badly to go to Mars when we could spend that money on a moon-base first? A moon-base is WAY more bad ass than walking around on a desolate piece of shit planet with nothing cool on it.
>>
>>133598470
the moon base has literally only 2 things over a mars base

1) on the side we see from earth given how the moon rotates as it orbits its shielded from debris if you build the base on that side. craters we see were formed long ago and the moon when it was closer as it moved farther out had probably turned a bit more

2) its closer and there is no point in a given year where it would be harder to reach

that said its still a waste of resources at the current time if they dont have a working model on earth. it would still be more than a month for anything to be sent to the moon from earth so they need a proof of theory thats works. none of the bio domes work

and extended time on the moon would weaken your heart. no return to earth after a point and no doctors on the moon

That's the Moon. And we've explored the Moon with Apollo, so we know the Moon has less surprises for us than Mars could have.

Trump is putting pressure on NASA to GET SHIT DONE. Lots to make up for after the Obama years.
Mars is just a shit test. Getting space industry started is the goal.

It's not a contest between a base on Mars and one on the moon, a base on Mars isn't even the question right now, just going there is. Moon-base is realistic.

>why not start on the moon then go to Mars?

Mars is a much better place to start. It has an atmosphere, albeit an incredibly thin one, but it has one. This is a lot better than nothing. It's lower gravity is still much greater than that of the Moon's and you can actually live on there/pro-create long term because of this. With the Moon you'd have to constantly come down to Earth if you wanted to pro-create/get more people. This isn't really solvable. Further, Mars's day cycle is much closer to Earth's than the Moon's. And to conclude, there is a lot more there in the way of resources that can be used to build a long-term habitat. Mars is actually easier once you get there, it's just further away.

Using the example of earlier settlers and pioneers in America, it is akin to wanting to choose Arizona over California. You pick California despite how much further away it is.
>>
>>133599916
its not so much the destination and what it has to offer thats important.
its about being able to go and the technology required to do it that is.

We still need to transport things to Mars (food, water, terraforming equipment eventually maybe) it's much much cheaper to send this stuff to the moon, ferrying humans between earth and moon multiple times a year is cheaper than sending 1 manned mission to Mars.

You have to do that to the Moon as well, except that the Moon has no real long term expansion. Mars does because the people there can literally make their own fucking kids, and don't need to either go back to Earth or have someone sent there. This is key to any sort of colonialism. You need people in the colony. You can either make, or send people. Ideally you can do both. Mars can do both, the Moon can only do one. And you can only stay on the Moon for a short period of time (relative to your life-span) before you have to go back to the Earth. Also, in theory, you can grow things on Mars. You will never be able to do that on the Moon without avoiding soil altogether and importing everything. The Moon is just a giant thresher that destroys everything. I can't even imagine trying to build anything there without the dust just destroying everything. It fucking can eat through Kevlar like it doesn't even exist. Any mechanical components that move and are exposed to this, would just be destroyed. The rover and the suits they used for the landings were fucking annihilated because of the dust.

Eh, no.

Depending on the mission the people who go there could either be astronauts, or private individuals. Zubrin and Musk have mentioned that the FH could get people to Mars, just to go there though. Essentially like the Moon missions. To stay there for longer, you need a lot more rockets, and a lot more powerful rockets. Something like the final proposed block of SLS, or the ITS. Anything else won't do. Zubrin's long-term plan is built around an SLS-type rocket. Musk on the other hand wants something much larger via the ITS.

I have a feeling though that Musk's ego won't let him give NASA the first shot at Mars because he needs to put that feather in his cap for the ITS. This is the whole reason why he's doing the Grey Dragon mission. To break down the notion with politicians that anything beyond LEO is strictly NASA, and NASA alone in capability. NASA believes this as well and is trying to maintain a sort of monopoly because they want the gibs from the government to go to them and no one else.

I am attaching a picture of the 2017 Astronaut candidates. Yes, there is a number of women, and even a black woman but I looked over their credentials and pretty much all of them except one of the blondes has been around NASA/Spaceflight for a considerable amount of time. The black chick even did two internships (one for JPL and another for NASA), and also helped do research for Curiosity. So it isn't like she's not qualified.

Either way, with a NASA mission they'll send whoever is the most qualified for the mission. Specifically because they don't want to risk anything bad happening. Musk on the other hand will send whoever happens to pay him, within reason. He knows exactly how bad an accident would be for his company.
