What motivates people from well-off backgrounds to take up extreme Leftism? Do they find their lives so empty and hollow that they must resort to such ideologies to feel whole? Does the fact that their life was basically handed to them give them an inferiority complex?

I'm not great at this armchair psychology stuff, so it would be interesting to hear perspectives from people who personally know some of these Leftist bluebloods. I am personally acquainted with a good handful myself, but I don't know any of them well enough to get a picture of who they really are.

"Middle class socialists"

They hate the rich and want to make sure the poor have no path to become middle class.

They think they will attain power of some kind after a leftist revolution, they think they won't lose everything. A marxist leninist society has no use for these intellectuals because they quickly become it's biggest critics.

Satan
Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

and Jews
Revelation 2:9
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Revelation 3:9
Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

You can not refute this.

What propels a person to project so hard?

As a guy going to college for psychology, I must first preface by saying that generalizing the entirety of a people is more sociologists. As a Psychologist, I could definitely pinpoint why on an individual basis, and even figure out what points helped contribute to reaching a certain ideology.

Anyway, it comes down to their experiences. A lot of it, believe it or not, really matters in their childhood. It's why there are these adults who cling to the childhood TV shows and movies for political references, or keep up with their beliefs long after they are shattered. Even in the face of irrefutable facts, belief is stronger. Though I can definitely say it's not an inferiority complex, but more an ideology forced from one generation to the next, and then compounded by the TV and the media. Yes, the media has a huge effect on a person's beliefs and ideals, and (no surprise) on one's political views. So when you create a mental conditioning for the populace, in this case, those of the left through TV shows that they enjoy with leftist elements combined with a leftist environment (read as: middle class, where the fruits of the rich is unobtainable, but the poverty of the poor unthinkable) they end up becoming the socialists you refer to. I don't think they find their lives "empty" or "hollow". I just simply believe that it's because of their environment and hidden reinforcement, they end up becoming politically extreme.

But it's not just the left that ends up becoming politically extreme. Those that rebel, or resist this extremism of the left, end up becoming the "alt-right". In such a manner, the alt-left and alt-right are results of their environment. I doubt you find your life to be "Empty" or "hollow" because of what you believe. Rather, it's just what you think is right. Keep that in mind when thinking of your opponents. They are not unreasonable robots, just people with a different opinion.

Everyone needs a religion. If it's not something like Christianity, then it's Egaltiarianism. The religious belief that all people are equal

I don't care so much about the psychology of right-wing neckbeards on /pol/ because being such a thing requires little effort and sacrifice. But yeah I suppose you could easily say an inferiority complex and mommy issues play a role with that.

The surprisingly large number of well-off people among extreme leftists is to me a much more interesting phenomenon.

I wouldn't call it "religion" per se.

I think that, as Beauvoir and Sartre claimed, there is a fundamental and impossible to resolve ambiguity in what is desirable for humans, at both the individual and group level. However, facing that ambiguity is painful and anxiety-inducing, so most people try to embrace some supposed "self-evident truth" in order to evade it. Religion and radical egalitarianism both fulfill that desire, but that doesn't make radical egalitarianism a form of religion. Or, to draw an analogy: You need to eat to live, and cheese is a thing you can eat, but so is sausage. That doesn't mean sausage is a form of cheese.

Something filling the same need as a religion doesn't make it the same /thing/ as a religion.
