Luke starts off as a dunce and we see him dicking around with his lightsaber and Yoda making a fool of him on his long, hard path to being a full blown Jedi.

On a sidenote, I'm currently playing through the Redguard questline in Elder Scrolls Online. It's making me want to shoot myself in the brain, but I have to do it for an achievement.

Orcs are thuggish. Dark Elves are sneaky. High Elves are snobby. Khajiit are skooma-dealing thieves. But the writers were afraid to impose any sort of stereotypes on the Redguard, making them the most boring people to talk to.

The movie went through significant reshoots and it shows. Without giving anything away, characters are set up and then quickly leave the plot while accomplishing nothing.
Many characters just aren't written in a way that makes you care about them and their arch.

TL;DR: if you want to see X-wings and explosions it's worth sticking around, but don't expect to love it.

They should have split up 7 and made it into 2 or 3 movies with an actual plot instead of the mess they released. They could have at least left out any battles against Kylo until the next movie. He should have been able to instantly kill both Rey and Finn with the difference in experience and practice. Finn might have been okay if they made him the main character instead of Rey and developed him a bit more.

Finn was like a bro, and he wasn't perfect but i liked him. Rey on the other hand did everything, i can fly better than Solo in his own ship i just got inside and master the force in seconds. i like how the stormtroopers did stuff instead of just get shot

If it was about the Empire from 4-6 I would whole heartedly agree, the Empire is much more interesting than any of the other miscellaneous factions. However, episode 7 completely destroyed the integrity of the empire.

In ep 7 they transformed the empire into literal Nazis. There was a scene where there was an officer screaming at the top of his lungs in front a legion of storm troopers about how they'll conquer their foes for the great of the motherland backdropped against red flags that were almost identical to swastica banners. There was no redeeming qualities about the Empire in that movie because from the beginning you realize they're evil and they kidnap babies and raise them to be mindless killing drones completely devoid of any humanity or free thought.

Don't get me wrong, I realize that even in the original movies the Empire had almost direct ties to real life Nazis (storm troopers), but it wasn't overt, it was subtle and the audience knew they were the bad guys without introducing a literal Hitler screaming and doing nazi salutes.

Parallels aside, the old empire was fascinating. Rebels were plain and boring. The trade federation was half baked. The republic was kinda cool but mostly because it was a precursor to the Empire.

Ren never made it clear at all that the bolt was slowing him down. Maybe if they showed his accuracy plummeting or him getting tired it would have helped but if you didn't see the bolt scene at all you wouldn't know he was injured. When he punched his gut that was like him psyching himself up thats it.
