I've noticed this trend myself but it seems to extend to a lot of areas of life. There are very few people who will engage in topics beyond mere superficiality and some who will outright self censor. When I question them about it or their reasoning it usually comes down to not holding strong beliefs about anything or they're scared of being judged for what they espouse.
