Taiwan is a larger more realistic counter-example, it's what China would be if Truman hadn't allowed Communists to take over thr mainland. Still it doesn't seem to inspire ordinary Chinese people much. It's almost as if Chinese people are a collective hivemind race incapable of individual thought.

Yes and no, Macau is now one big casino, where everybody works in gambling and it has more money than Las Vegas, but when they sit down in restaurants and cultural gatherings they can speak Portuguese.

The CCP sees HK as a threat and is sending Chinese people to live there so that they will vote to join China in one of the many referendums. Kind of like Europe
