This is a red board which means that it's strictly for adults (Not Safe For Work content only). If you see any illegal content, please report it.

Be honest: you don't know what 'net neutrality' is because you've never read the bill. I haven't either. But what I do remember is SOPA and PIPA and CISPA and how vehemently against all of those the internet was, again, having never even read any of those bills. I was okay with this, mostly because I am generally against government regulation as a whole. Those bills were all shut down and everyone cheered. Then along came 'net neutrality' and for some reason, everybody fucking loves it. And as far as I can tell, they love it purely because it's called fucking 'net neutrality'. Patriot Act anyone?

>"Precise terms and details of the policy have not been made publicly available — a situation that prompted two Republican FCC commissioners to seek to postpone Thursday's vote. That request was denied."

This was from when it was being voted on, during Obama's administration. Then they voted.

>"Thursday's vote comes after Commissioners Michael O'Rielly and Ajut Pai asked that the FCC "immediately release the 332-page Internet regulation plan publicly and allow the American people a reasonable period of not less than 30 days to carefully study it."

>"That request was denied; we'll post the document here when it's available."

They voted that shit in without anyone in the public sphere ever even having seen it. I don't know about you anons, but that shit really activated a few almonds.
>>
>>133438009
And now we see if they will even allow a post such as this.

the internet is far more damaging to the morale of a citizenry than it is beneficial. for that matter, computers should also be illegal. and mandatory public schooling should equally divide the school day between education and hard physical training.

Its because net neutrality helps everyone, faggotron.

With net neutrality, the commies can have websites to their commie shit without issues.
With net neutrality, the ancap can pretend to be retarded as much as they want.
With net neutrality, we are allowed to criticize niggers and have a conversation here

Without net neutrality, we are at the mercy of corporations. We would be literally living in internet fascism. And no, its not Mussolinni who is driving us there.

So everyone should support net neutrality, we don't need to censor anyone. We NEED to allow the commies and kikes to exist in order for us to have a place to hate them.
>>

Because the internet was new, and there was no regulation fucktard, net neutrality is keeping the internet running like it was in the 90s. It became an official law to keep the internet neutral. Hence the name "net neutrality"

Again, you're not from here. Go back to your blacked European shithole.

You already pay for a computer, electricity, internet, and a house to store it in.

Nigger you sound like you're implying that I wouldn't pay money for more things I want. And that people like me who actually have an impact wouldn't still vote with our wallets for a service that supports "free" accessable internet as well as paid services.

Once you get water, you can use it however you want at the same price per gallon, if you use 3 gallons to wash your car or to bathe, it's the same price for that water. Currently this applies to the Internet, ISPs can only charge for data you use, not for how (or where) you use it

You are all missing the target. The regulations preventing new ISPs from coming into your region and competing are the problem. Anywhere Google is able to weedle its way in all of a sudden the deals start flowing from the other guys. This should be about accessing the utility lines so you have more than 2 choices in any given region. If you want to be able to actually punish your ISP for being shitty by leaving then this is where the fight actually is. Right now you are just choosing between cartel members that have agreed tos stay out of each others way.

The internet has changed even in the short time between SOPA, PIPA and now. The majority of use by a huge margin is social media and things that tie into it like youtube. The internet is entirely co-opted by normies now, and they don't care about things like net neutrality. I doubt they would even notice if it went to a cable like subscription model as long as they got facefuck and instawhore.

The normies have taken perhaps the greatest tool of mankind and turned it into a vehicle for attention whoring. Let it all burn I say.

>>133444065
So, not that I'm against net neutrality, but here's the actual question:

Say a bill is passed that makes it illegal for them to "censor" the internet. How would this be enforced?

1) How would the average user even know it was happening?
2) What if they shape traffic in a way that affect information that is deemed illegal? Is that against the law?
3) Is it then against the law to shape data?
4) Obviously QoS and VPNs are ok...so what kind of data is not allowed to be prioritized and what isn't? How do you define censoring vs throttling?

To be perfectly honest, I don't see this going well regardless. If you pass a bill that says "you're allowed to censor" then you get censorship that is controlled by corporations. If you pass a bill that says "You're not allowed to censor" then you get censor ship that is controlled by the government that is controlled by corporations.....

Who is making the argument that net neutrality increases competition for ISPs? I see it being the opposite as maintaining the current state of things. If people know that ISPs are allowed to throttle, they will want clarity as to which are and are not given portions of bandwidth. This will increase the chances that other companies can create services with different features and possibly different package options from individual ISPs. The typical arguments for net neutrality are fundamentally

Network neutrality is fine, it's a perfect de facto standard... but that's the key word, de facto. No one FORCED service providers to treat network traffic neutrally, and even up until a couple years ago the government couldn't prevent ISPs from violating the concept of network neutrality without framing the complaints in terms of existing FTC regulations. Because we have always lived under Net Neutrality, which allows us to stop them from being a bunch of kikes.

If they make any small change to net neutrality then the next time they try to that things won't go so smooth for the consumers.

Consumers should have the power over the market, not the other way around.

>>133447585
You don't understand at all how this works, technology doesn't work like Economics 101 tells you.

No one has broken Windows monopoly, everyone that tried gets bought by Microsoft. The ISPs have done the same to competitors. And will continue to do so forever. We live in an era of super monopolies that are too big to fall.

The monopoly cycle hasn't been broken for 30 years, and is simply not going to break.
>>
>>133447774
This is about the bill that would repeal neutrality, that's what all the drama has been about today.
>>
>>133447222
Net neutrality is not the government providing internet to us. You're comparing apples to oranges. The Government is leaving it as it is: how everyone likes it (except for whatever cable company you work for obviously).
>>
>>133447677
>So you're saying they're allowed to throttle right now, despite pic related?
No, I'm saying your new hipster companies that want to get into the market can do it right now.

They will have as much chances as they would have under a fascist internet.
>>
>>133446574
It wasn't even a bill passed through Congress though, it was an order given by unelected bureaucrats using a loose interpretation of regulatory authority granted to their organization by Congress before the internet even existed. God forbid Congress getting to decide these things instead of those guys.

Probably not.
Want a list of providers in the US? Here's an interactive map: https://www.broadbandmap.gov/number-of-providers
>>
Net neutrality is necessary because the American broadband space is effectively monopolized. 51% of Americans have access to only one ISP, 38% have access to only 2. ISP companies work out deals to carve out exclusive areas, and sign contracts with municipalities to block other ISPs from laying cable of their own. The costs of laying cable and the web of restrictions put up by existing ISPs makes creating a competitive ISP company virtually impossible.

If we lived in a world where every American had 10-20 ISPs to choose from, all competing with one another, the discussion about net neutrality would be very different. Instead we live in the world of ISP monopoly in America, and we need net neutrality to stop this monopoly from fucking us in the ass more than they already are.

Buy into Goverment Internet. A new arm of the government is created, complete with infrastructure and administration is created to monitor, control and enforce it. Everyone is mandated to get the issued User ID and your connection is faster than you have ever seen it before in your life.

Then you experience an outage. You're local government office will get that straightened out in 4-6 weeks. You go to your phone to bitch about it and get flagged for hate speech.

Except there are a lot of blocks that major companies and the government hold over other companies starting up. There are a lot of articles out there on this. Ending net neutrality would not automatically make it easier for start ups, but it would increase the interest of customers (IE market demand for varied services). That is the drive a market needs. Without the drive, with government mandating all traffic gets same treatment, the established companies with entrenched lobbies have an even larger advantage in maintaining their status.

The monopoly isn't a result of regulations, it's a result of business practices and realities of the industry. To compete with an upstream ISP, you need to build your own physical infrastructure to do so. This costs millions of dollars. Aside from all the red tape existing companies have put up preventing people with money from laying their own cable, the prohibitive cost is still there preventing competition.

>(a) In General.—The rule adopted by the Federal Communications Commission in GN Docket No. 14–28 on February 26, 2015 (relating to broadband Internet access service), shall have no force or effect, and the Commission may not reissue such rule in substantially the same form, or issue a new rule that is substantially the same as such rule, unless the reissued or new rule is specifically authorized by a law enacted after the date of enactment of this Act.

There's all the formal fluff too, but this is the only important part. All this bill does is invalidate the order passed by the FCC (over 300 pages long, linked above), and states that if the FCC wants the same rules to go into effect again, it has to get put before Congress and passed as a bill, like these sorts of things normally do.

If "net neutrality" becomes a real issue instead of a hypothetical one in the future, then people will need to go through the normal process of lobbying their Congressmen and Senators about it, or they can do the same thing they've been doing to keep ISP bullshit from becoming a problem that was working just fine between the dawn of the internet and 2015.

were put into service to use copper/aluminum as the delivery medium. Even many of the 'fiber' connections that people have are actually copper at the last 25-50ft of pole to your home.

No, unless your house was built in the last 15 years, they are not going to rip up the ground and route fiber to your neighborhood unless you were luck enough to win the lotto and Google or AT&T blessed your town.

In case you didn't know, the Government put those power poles in your town with your taxes dollars and AT&T ADDED EVERY SINGLE PHONELINE to those poles through the private sector work and money from it's customers.

To this day, AT&T still owns those lines and leases (Not sells) to cable companies, Data providers and, still, your telephone and VOIP services. AT&T would love to sell it all to the government, it doesn't have ENOUGH MONEY to buy them out.
