Government = society and nation. Without government there is no nation because the government is literally the public's form of organization. There is no special race of people or select in-group that makes up the government in a democracy. They are selected and their decisions are transparent. Not all markets are the same. If we knew absolutely nothing about the healthcare market then I'd agree with you that the best solution likely fell in line with basic market principles.

Its simply the case however that healthcare markets with heavy government involvement operate better the world over.

Sure easy; You're comparing profit driven companies to people driven government... two completely different things with different agendas and goals.

The former will jack up prices without increasing services... and no one can do anything about it.

The latter is willing to run at a loss if the services are appreciated enough... and if they raise prices or lower service quality enough we can throw them out at the polls, or complain to local government.

So there you go - two completely different circumstances.... companies work well for somethings (competitive markets and non-essential services)...

...and governments work well for other things (where services are essential or vitally important to social health, or where the poor need access just as much as the rich).

I keep making this same argument with people I know. Why the fuck would you want the government completely controlling your healthcare. I don't trust the any authority (government or corporate) with any monopoly.

I want a truelly free market health insurance market and I want a public option as part of that free market. Fuck, let states and the federal government offer different public options.
