Have you ever been to reddit? Their comment chains may start relevant to the op, but inevitably they devolve into a series of virtue signals, tired puns, socially acceptable humor, try hard edgy responses, or a number of other circle jerkery techniques. It's like if 99% of 4chan posts had guaranteed (you)'s.
Another factor is the number of subreddits, when you have many hundreds of times the amount of boards as 4chan, it's pretty easy to rack up traffic, especially considering the aforementioned tendency to circle jerking.
