these have little to do with one another. In fact, people often become less free under democracies because populists from the left and right erode hard won, aristocratically minded liberties. Property rights are eroded because the masses bray about "unfairness". The presumption of innocence is eroded as the masses fall over themselves to cut corners and ensure speedy convictions. Privacy is eroded because the masses make decisions on platitudes and speciously convincing adages like "nothing to hide; nothing to fear", which isn't an argument, but people will be convinced by the repetition of "nothing to".

Democracies in large, accessible, heterogeneous countries are unstable and will slowly abolish the social and economic liberties granted to citizens in the undemocratic age. Your liberty is like your health, you only notice it after you lose it. The masses, in their myopia, will gladly obliterate ~2000 years of progress (in the case of England --- yes, progress!) of liberty in under a century because they have been franchised and know not what they do.

"Freedom" is tricky, because we're not truly "free" under capitalism. Economic liberty is not "freedom". Zizek makes a great analogy here: In authoritarianism, the father says to the child "you will see your grandmother, get in the car now", and the child may protest and think "I am not free", but he has no illusions. In capitalism, with its obsession with "choice", the father says "now, you know how much your grandmother loves you, and how she has given you Christmas presents, and so on. You don't have to do, you have the choice, but would you want to upset your grandmother so much?". So in the latter case, the child has a choice, but he is not free, because there is a subtler coercion of guilt.

So it is, say Marxists, under capitalism. We are not in fact "free" at all. We should not simply ask "can I buy this can of cola?", but "why do I want to buy this can of cola?"
