Hard to say; They've committed elements from a half dozen Military arms and Militias (including Russian ground forces), and that's just what's been confirmed. I would say to be smart about it and to have the manpower to take and hold areas (even just swathes of desert), it would tkae at least 25k men on the Salami front (including support staff) with NDF in reserve, with about 10-15k (again support staff incl.) going up the boarder with Iraq (not to mention the elements of ISF/PMU on the other side).

After that I don't know. They say the Aleppo offensive won't push much more into Raqqa, but we'll see.

In Lincoln's First Inaugural Address he promised he had no intention to change slavery in the South. He argued it would be unconstitutional for him to do so. But he promised he would invade any state that failed to collect tariffs in order to enforce them. There were no court cases that had ruled on the constitutionality of secession before the civil war and the southern states wanted to be free of crushing economic taxation in the same way that the colonies wanted freedom from economic slavery. The only difference is that the south lost and the colonies did not.

Lincoln managed to use slavery feels to rally the union and give him the "moral high ground" when it became apparent the war wouldn't be a quick victory. Basically no different than the US intervention into syria on the pretext of "muh children" when in reality it has nothing to do with kids getting gassed.

Lee saw it coming 150 years ago and he was right.

You're making assumptions of Lincolns original intent based on speeches from confederates on why the confederacy seceded.
