They literally did nothing wrong. They're the end game of right wing libertarians when they realize that political banter will never achieve freedom quite like a bullet to the traitors of your country will.

There first mistake was trusting non-Irish and allowing them in the IRA.
These were easily turned by the Brits like Freddie Scappaticci who was Italian, born in Northern Ireland and was given access to central command.
His job in the IRA was to torture IRA members who were suspected of being spys and get a confession out of them.

Their second mistake was believing the Brits were not ruthless enough that they would kill their own spies or let them be killed.
