Threatening to dox is illegal, right? This could be grounds for a lawsuit of epic proportion. Any lawyers can confirm?

It might be harassment. Legal grey area since it isn't illegal to reveal someone's online public postings, as long as no information was obtained illegally.
So it wouldn't be illegal to doxx someone as alt-lite as long as you just did simple connecting of dots. They can always countersue for harassment or claim that it wasn't them and they are wrongly identified and are experiencing financial loss from the false exposure.

The kid was 15, if his name gets released that would be the end of any hopes for a career, if he lives anywhere remotely liberal.
He is not 15 and naming someone newsworthy is 100% legal.
