In 1520, after King Christian II of the Kalmar Union (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) had put down a Swedish army and taken back control over Sweden, he promised complete amnesty in return for his coronation and held a feast for Swedish nobles and clergy.
At this feast was Gustaf Trolle, archbishop of Uppsala and staunch unionist. He ordered Sten Sture the Younger and his "Stureparty" of Swedish anti-unionists tried for heresy. The exact nature of their heresy has been lost to history, but they were all proven guilty and executed in what is today known as the Stockholm Bloodbath. Swedish dissatisfaction with this killing of their nobles and higher clergy led to several rebellions and eventually meant the end of the Kalmar Union, leaving Denmark-Norway and Sweden to go their own ways.
Now the reason Sweden is suffering today is an act of god. God guided the Swedish politicians of the past half-century to more and more cucky extremes in an effort to punish them for daring to defy the will of Archbishop Gustaf Trolle who was literally born in the year 1488. If Sweden would just have gone along and accepted the rule of a Danish king and the just punishments handed down by the whitest, most holy archbishop ever, everything would have worked out just 1488 for Sweden.
