What the filmakers didn't expect was that plenty of people were more than happy to talk to Hitler about their problems and their worries about the direction the country is heading. The actor who played Hitler said in an interview that he was shocked at the reactions he received from normal people. So while the point of the film is to prove that "We evil Germans would follow Hitler again if given the chance!", the result is that you end up sympathizing with this very sentiment.

I guess it comes down to whether you view the prospect of it "happening again" with fear or hope.
