Umm because the Muslims back then we're different than now, it was before 40 years of expeditionary wars in their lands, terrorism, the "colonial Israeli state" in Palestine, and etc.
The Muslim world was less *screaming voice* Allahu AkbOOM and more *soft voice* Allahu Akbar.
He respected them because the way he saw it, they respected themselves. And they hated Jews as much as him so that helped a lot too.
Certainly if he were here now that would not be his thoughts on them, it would be much more nuanced.
