One of the weird things about English is that is it he youngest language in the branch from old german (which would be close enough to Slovenian, the archaic one) yet it has so many obtuse unspoken rules on how a phrase should sound.

German has been progressively making it easier to speak in the past tense without needing to know all the irregular form of verbs and matching it with their correct endings to match the gender and case.

I speak 5 languages and of those, English is the easiest one - by far. It's extremely simple. Even with irregular verbs. This is good, because I think this is the main reason why it's spreading. Cultural impact of the US on rest of the world is a huge, huge contributing factor, of course, but I think the simplicity of English is still the most important one.

I think the ease of English has nothing to do with learning the language itself, but rather the availability of people to practice with since it was the language of a large global empire, followed by their bratty son. More people to practice with, through a lot of attractive fun entertainment options like media make it really easy to start learning English, to think and make it second nature.

However, when you aren't using English constantly it's quite rough to transition from something not a part of the English linguistic family.
