extra curriculars.

doing it in elementary and potentially some middle school is fine, but colleges won't give a shit about you unless you competed in multiple academic groups, played 2 sports, and saved the children in africa in your spare time with a 4.0 gpa.

Getting into a good college is a lot fucking harder than it used to be. It used to be as easy as all As and being the head of a couple clubs.
>>
>>132560269
I don't have time, neither does my wife. How about sending your kids to a good school.
>>
>>132560826
What?

I was homeschooled and got sent to a duel enrollment program in my local college at like 15 which got me the credits and scholarship I needed to start doing a bachlors at rice

Stop making shit up
>>
>>132560826
Got summer school every year in middle school, got the bare minimum in hs, applied to one college got in with a scholarship now I am in grad school.
Life is kinda weird like that.

I went to public zoo School from k-9, then finished high school online and received a legitimate diploma. I'm honestly really glad I did though and it's not because I was bullied or socially autistic it was because I told my mom that I didn't want to deal with schreeching sheboons at 7 am in the cafeteria.
>>

>>
Because they wont be prepared for the workforce. And they will never get checked.

Right..you guys don't have time because you have to both work full time in order to earn enough to pay 50% in taxes back to the government and have enough left over to make the minimum payment on your gigantic mortgage and may be put some rice and peanut butter on the table. Keep grinding on that wheel of pain anon.
>>
Took me a second to get it but it makes sense if it takes 10 minutes to make one cut it should take 20 to make 2 cuts...also what kinda weak ass takes 10 minutes to cut a single board
>>
>>132560826
Why do you need to go to a (((good college)))?
>>
Well I'd say, "How stupid are you?" So if one teacher makes one mistake and there are1.65 million teachers, I'd say that was well above 7 sigma quality.

You're one of those people who looks as Medicare fraud being $60 billion and you say "WOW" but you don't realize that the total Medicare spending is $3.2 trillion, making the fraud 1.8% which any company would kill their mothers for.

Learn to look past the story someone wants to tell to the one that makes sense.

>If one teacher makes one mistake
You're implying, and your math requires, that this was the only public school teacher who has made a braindead error.

You're also not considering that if a teacher is able to make a mistake this fundamental, they are likely the source of many such mistakes.

Finally, the fact that they have not been replaced implies their peers are not substantially better.

Not necessarily. Their union-negotiated terms of employment may make them nearly impossible to fire.

This is a very poorly-worded math problem, but remember the point is solving proportions. It could have been literally anything else other than sawing boards and it would have been absolutely fine.
>>
>>132560269
Like really WTF is this (((reasoning))). If a single cut requires 10 minutes and you want four pieces in 20 mins you need a second price of wood for two cuts total. If you are using a single price of wood it would take fucking 30mins as it requires three cuts! In what fucking dimension does it take 15 mins to get three prices of wood?!
>>
>>132571609
It actually displays beautiful how fucking stupid our education system is.

You're taught to respond to stimuli, not think.

>This is a very poorly-worded math problem

>>
>>132571811
Actually I noticed this same thing when I entered the casual workforce.

They'll tell you what to do, how to do it, what order to do it in, but very rarely did an instructor ever explain why you were doing something or helped you understand the system you were working with.

Me, I'd try to learn WHY I'm doing something and how it works, then I can do it better. But nope, just press red button when you see green light monkey.
>>
>>132571609
It's incredibly poorly made. Regardless a true teacher would've solved this on her own and given credit to her students
>OK class it appears that this question was a trick question, realistically >the answer is 20, but as the key dictates 15 I will accept either answer >for credit. Now let's solve this problem together on the board.
That bitch is lazy and doesn't care about teaching kids, she just goes off the answer key blindly.

Exactly. Basic pattern recognition -> memorized formula. Beep boop I am doomed to be replaced by a computer.

As someone who trains entry level people for a a living it's because I can expect a 20% retention rate after a year if I'm lucky. The 20% that will stay are smart enough that they will seek out further training and knowledge. The rest I just need to get good enough to do what they are paid to do.
>>
>>132569606
That's because people disproportionately choose to homeschool their kids when they have the resources and knowledge to do so. Interpreting this as "homeschooling in-and-of-itself intrinsically causes better academic performance than public schooling" is retarded and proof you shouldn't be in charge of educating your kids if you want them to stand a chance at succeeding in life.

I was homeschooled.

Got into a great college because I scored in the 99th percentile on both the SAT & ACT literature sections. I fucked around completely in high school, just playing sports.

Tons of people in my area were homeschooled, and like anything else it depends on the kid themselves and how much effort they put into their schooling.

The "socialization" argument is stupid imo, it nearly always comes down to the kids personality as to whether they'll be a social butterfly or not.

I would absolutely consider homeschooling your boys, they don't get a fair shot in public schools. Boys learn differently than girls do, and homeschool allows boys to expend energy instead of being pent-up and put on adderal.

It's actually 10 minutes.

Originally it took her that long the first time because she didn't know what she was doing. Now that she does, she is just as fast, so now it only takes 5 minutes to saw a board in half, and another 5 minutes to do it again to make 3 pieces.

If the question was about a boy doing the same amount of time the first time, it would only take him 5 minutes because he would be smart enough to pick up one of the first pieces and saw it in half to get the 3 pieces.

15 minutes is a correct answer in some cases.
Consider the following:
The board you are cutting is circular.
You are dividing board into equal pieces.
Then:
Cutting circular board in two will take you 10 minutes when you saw it along diameter.
Cutting circular board in three will take you 15 minutes to make 3 cuts along the radii to the center. (each cut along radii takes 5 minutes, a cut along the diameter = 2 cuts along radius = 2*5 minutes).

A "piece" in this context may not be a segment of the board, but an item that requires several actions to create. This would explain the slightly odd time frame for a "piece." Thus 15 minutes is correct. The problem lies in the mental imagery and prototypical aspects associated with the word "board." Notice that the problem does not use the phrase "in half" to describe the action.

>Give me one good reason why you shouldn't homeschool your kids?

I can't. As long as you and your wife are dedicated to researching the curriculum and dedicated to it.

Once the local elementary introduced "Heather Has Two Mommies". I had a spirited debate with the Principal and District heads then promptly pulled both our kids out. That was in the mid-90's. Home-schooled them till the 7th grade then I was fortunate to be making a good enough living to put them in private school for the 8-12 grades. Lots off work but well worth it. Both are doing great in their chosen fields.

Dont 'Merica's trailer parks 'homeschool' their kids?

If not than trailerpark brat turds should 100% be home schooled in the USA!

No doubt it will lead to the next generation of nobel prize candidates.

You know what's the worst about this shit?

It's not that the answer doesn't seem to make sense, it's that the entire question is constructed wrong. They wanted to do this proportion from kid:

10 minutes of work = 2
x minutes of work = 3

find x.

Now it works:

2x = 30
x = 30/2

x=15

The answer is however wrong from the practical point of view because you don't make 2 or 3 pieces, you make 1 or 2 cuts. Either the guy who wrote this question had no common sense or he's trying to purposefully make those kids defile logic when told to listen and believe.

Obviously in that case teacher should've just ignored what the answer proposed by test author was, but she's a dumb bitch so she didn't.

Because you can afford private school.

>Prayer in schools
Anyone can pray in schools. School led prayer is what's not allowed because it would be endorsing one religion over another.

>kids need to learn how to interact with same age individuals over a long period of time

They can with home-school groups. In our area there were several families that supported each other and had field trips ,science days, etc. All good parents with generally good kids.

Why would you want your child learning how to interact with a bunch of children who's parents only use school as a daycare and have no manners or respect?

Maybe if it was a circle (cutting out sectors).
Two pieces = 2 cuts = 10min.
Three pieces = 3 cuts (continuing from first two cuts) = 15min.
But OP has a picture with a straight plank so IDK.

that actually sounds like a good alternative to schools

I'm fucking SEETHING.

No wonder Americans don't know shit about their government. If they don't have inherit curiosity to further review all this shit when they are adults, they'll never know better.

Explains a lot really.

You all should look up the (((socialization))) meme and who pushes it, *especially* things like pre-school.

Feminization of men begins at a young age by forcing malleable boys to socialize like women.

Sounds crazy of course, but humans have known for centuries that the habits young children learn are often with them for life. The Jesuits used to say "give us a child until he is 7, and we care not where he goes afterwards"

>You all should look up the (((socialization))) meme

Nothing crazy about it. Young minds can be imprinted very early and if you sway just a couple the rest follow easily.

I am just thankful I am an old fart that made it through that life experience without messing my kids up, well... at least not too badly... according to them. lol

Nope, to cut lumber into three pieces you only need to cut in two spots.
Example:

The idea of home schooling is to avoid government "education". Why would you want your kid going to college if you decided to homeschool him?
>>
>>132582590
Because there's a thing called private school, even for colleges. If your kid isn't smart enough to get admitted to one then they need to be gassed anyways.
