Allow the new SK government to try its preferred policy of engagement. The ultimate goal of both sides is the reunification of the Korean race. Obviously, each side has different views about what kind of government should rule Korea. A long time ago with was talk about a confederation agreement, and the maintenance of respective sovereignties, but with gradual economic integration. The NK officials don't want to get Ceausescued. The only way that won't happen is if unification can be stretched out over the span of two or three generations. By the time economic, social, and political integration have run their course, all of the old, tainted, NK elite will be dead, and the replacements will have less and less blood on their hands.

Kim, and pretty much the entire Inner Party know that they'll be in front of a Jewish tribunal of the North ever has a hard collapse. Their best hope for Juche is a slow integration with the South so they can incorporate as much of the ideology as possible, while benefiting from reformed markets.

Basically, they need a chance to pivot with dignity, the same way China changed in the 70's. As satisfying as it might be for western ideological predispositions, a coup in the north followed by human rights trials would not actually be the best scenario. The best scenario is far less exciting, and lacks a definitive moment at which point the conflict is over. Ideally, it just fades away over the course of the next 50 years.

The Korean people got fucked over worse than the Germans AND the Japanese at the end of WWII. Their country was carved up as war booty just because it was technically part of the Empire of Japan, as a colonial territory, even though the Koreans were a non-combatant nation. They've suffered long enough.

I personally would like to see us, and South Korea open up some form of economic relationship with North Korea. This would speed up their work, but I really don't see that stopping either way.

The question would be how much the North Koreans actually hate Americans ideologically. It seems that the people are becoming more and more aggressive with the authority in North Korea. If we could create an economic union to prevent them from going crazy with that nuke and continue the ideologically subversion through the black market while strengthening ties on the cover we could possibly get somewhere.
