He wrote a book called "Germania" which talked about the tribes north of the Rhine.
In that book, he called them uniformly similar, being large with light hair and blue eyes. He described them being similar as they have not shared blood with other people on account of how inhospitable (to the Romans) their territory was.

This book was lost for over a 1000 years until it was rediscovered in the 15th century, right when the German humanists were getting started. Naturally this book was a pretty big hit with them. The idea of a common "German" people just wasn't a thing. Naturally the HRE was around but it wasn't thought of as being a German thing. Just a bunch of separate kingdoms united together.

It was this idea of German nationhood that promoted thinkers like Jacob Grimm, who in the mid 19th century collected mythology and folk stories of the German people.

His biggest contribution to history, however, was his research into linguistics.
Grimm was able to connect the old German languages to what was then called "Aryan".

You can see all the pieces in place for the "Volksreich" the Nazis will promote.

Sometimes you can see history having a sort of inevitability to it, even if it's a fallacious feeling.

i didnt here of that story that he battled those. i read a bit of his diary. cant tell if its real or not, but a lot of people think it is. and in there he has a rather friendly encounter with the people living in antarctica/hollowearth
