The nukes didn't matter. The fact that Nagasaki, the centre of Christianity in Japan, and the firebombing of Tokyo happened is a travesty. We should have accepted the peace deal and used the nukes on the Soviets.

Actually, it was the Nagasaki Bomb that tipped the scales.

Hiroshima had been known about for two days when the final Imperial Conference happened, yet there was still a Majority opinion in the Cabinet to go through with Ketsu-Go. The Emperor was present and already knew about the Bomb and what it had done. The Soviet attack had happened the day before.

Then an aide rushed in and told everyone that another bomb had destroyed Nagasaki. That gave the Emperor the opening he needed to overrule the War Party and insist on an end to the war.

It was Charles Sweeney's fucked up Bockscar mission, no Tibbets' Hiroshima drop, that ended the war.

LeMay was furious with Sweeney. The primary target had been the Kokura Arsenal. Sweeney, in Bockscar, had waited too long at the rondezvous point for the photo plane. Great Artiste, the scientific plane flown by Fred Bock, was right behind him.

Both planes flew on to Kokura, but by the time they got there, the Arsenal was obscured in smoke, and Bomb Regulations called for Visual Drops only. They made three passes over Kokura, and started to take heavy flak and fighter opposition. That's when Sweeney made the decision to go to Nagasaki.

It remained a mystery why Kokura was obscured for 70 years. Bockscar's bay doors were actually open. The explanation was that there had been a firebombing at Yahata, a nearby town, the night before. This was only partly true. In fact, the Japanese lit up hundreds of oil filled cans around the city to obscure it from the air. The trick worked, and Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki.

The people of Kokura have kept this secret to themselves all these years, out of deference to Nagasaki.
