The first thing is to get them to understand and agree that there are no democracies in the modern world. Democracy would imply a majority rule vote on every decision. Want to go to war? Have a vote. Want to raise taxes? Have a vote.
Next you must explain that Western Governments are mostly representative republics or Parliamentary systems where you elect representatives to run the government. Now in the West in order to er elected you typically need to spend a lot of money campaigning so to get in power and stay in power you have to make yourself valuable to people with money.

Democracy and trade is an absolutely natural way for humanity to operate - But at the same time, authoritarianism is too.

The only successful types of economy or government are ones that swathes of the population naturally are willing to buy in to - Capitalism, for the ability to raise higher, and certain variants of Fascism, like National Socialism, for the ability to form a tight knit and advanced civilization.

It's why communism and other versions of fascism will never, ever succeed. Because most people don't naturally want to be in that system.
