They weren't very effective because they were hardly used and were brought to the table to late (logistical problems with moving projectiles/propellent and getting the guns themselves to a location where they would be beneficial after train routes had already been targeted/destroyed).
Their concept is/was sound.
Thus why we have 16" guns on destroyers and not just a bunch of missiles, even today.
