Clearly it hasn't occurred to you that there's a selection bias to your experiences. I'm guessing you didn't go to Sweden to spend six months living in a low rent apartment in a predominantly Muslim area.

If it's any consolation, you're not alone. It's pretty much the basis of liberal understanding of other cultures. They visit a country for a week, go to a bunch of "authentic" local attractions (read: tourist traps), think to themselves 'aren't there are lot of really lovely brown people (the ones serving them drinks, cooking their food and cleaning their rooms). And it never occurs to them that maybe, just maybe, all those brown people would be less nice to them if they didn't need their money.

Or they get a job there. Obviously they don't really speak the local language, so they socialise with mostly their coworkers and other expats. And they are then amazed that people working in the same industry as them - people with the same income, the same social circle, the same skills and education - are so similar to them, and so conclude that there's really nothing much to this whole "race" thing. Meanwhile, the other 95% of the local population carry on their lives in what might as well be a different universe.
