Why didn't George W. Bush campaign on behalf of John McCain in 2008? Was Bush just a lazy asshole? It is tradition for the president to campaign for his party's nominee if he himself is not running again for the presidency. Ronald Reagan campaigned a lot for George W. Bush's father in 1988, for example.

Instead, Bush abandoned McCain to stand alone against Obama - a fight that McCain lost.

Because Bush' approval ratings were like 25% due to him blowing up the economy. Nobody could stand his face at the time.
