I think something was bound to happen. The real tragedy is that in late 1916 Britain was just about broke so we could have avoided the last 2 years of the war which were the most destructive ones but the British elites offered the Jews Palestine so the US and unlimited funding prolonged the conflict.

FWIW I doubt Germany could have conquered all of France even without US intervention but they were sitting on extremely valuable territory so the peace probably would have been in their favour to some degree, if it was made in 1916.

It was the most important event in world history since maybe the fall of the roman empire. Its the reason the US is the most important and biggest superpower in the world
