Pre-modern medicine, most babies died, it was common to not even name a child for a few weeks or months sometimes, or if a child dies, name the next child the same name (if it was the same sex). It's common to find babies in middens or post holes or under doorways all the way into the early modern era because if you have a dead baby, you may as well use it as fertilizer, cork or a good luck charm.

Since they didn't name the baby immediately after birth, they knew that they would become endeared to it and they couldn't deal with loss of X babies.
