He offered a third force in the world to oppose eastern communism and western capitalism. We see that he didn't prevail, and then Europe was split by those two forces. Now, Europe is practically a collection of client states controlled by America, but it's slowly gaining independence again, but in the form of a totally cucked form of socialism which will be overrun in about 30 years when Africa becomes uninhabitable during their population explosion.
tl;dr Euronationalism was the only available option for the continent to maintain it's independence.
