Bringing race and hindsight in together on this to pretend it's not making good predictions. It's not a "misclassification" when a risk is identified, but the undesired event doesn't occur. If you classify one man eating an apple as low-risk, and another man playing russian roulette as high-risk, that doesn't become misclassification when that one particular man chokes to death and the other survives.

For the sake of argument, let's say 90% of Group A reoffends, and 10% of Group B does. A predictor will duly classify Group A as high-risk, and Group B as low-risk, and will make good predictions. If you describe all the exceptions as "misclassifications" then members of the worse group will more often be "misclassified" harshly, and the members of the better group will more often be "misclassified" leniently.

But exceptions aren't misclassifications. That's a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of risk.

A friend of mine works in data mining and was talking about a machine learning algorithm that was made to classify names based on how 'nice' they sound. It's overrated. One of those "Emperor Has No Clothes" things.

It's an extremely ambitious work, and hard to read. Between those two things, a whole lot of people buy it, give up on studying it after skimming a few sections, and then go around acting like it's exactly as profound and useful as Knuth wanted it to be, to conceal the fact that they haven't really read it.

Knuth didn't make up his mind of whether he was writing for programmers or computer scientists, so it's kind of a jumble of limited value to either.

Volume 1: The math introduction is fairly decent, although it's neither very relevant to practical programming nor a substitute for a proper discrete math textbook. The fictional assembly language is a total self-indulgence and deserves no attention from the reader whatsoever. The section on data structures is reasonably good, but unexceptional among textbooks on such things.

Volume 2: The (pseudo)random numbers section is pretty worthless, and that's half the book. The arithmetic section is solid, though I don't really have anything similar to compare it to.

Volume 3: Oh god, sorting algorithms. What a waste of time. This is one part where he definitely sided with computer scientists over practical programmers. The other half, the searching algorithms, is like the section on data structures: good but unexceptional among textbooks.

See, for practical programming, sorting and pseudorandom numbers boil down to one function each. So writing those functions is extremely specialized work. A whole book's worth of stuff is devoted to things almost nobody will work on. That's not being thorough, that's being unfocused, which sums up the whole enterprise.

I haven't dug into volume 4. I got suckered into buying the first 3 when I was young and gullible.
