Agreed but it's a symbol of the frivolous spending habits of millennials. They also want lattes from starbux instead of drip from home, the latest ifone, "craft" beers, etc.

I don't think he meant a literal financial argument, more of a swipe at the culture. Compare it to the poor immigrants or Depression generation who really tried to save as much as possible to buy a nice home.
>>
>>132132316
I've never had it before Jose.
>>
>>132132591
The main/first argument against this is that it's literally impossible no matter how much you save to get a house on normal salaries nowadays, whereas while it would take lots of saving, it was perfectly possible back then.
>>
>>132132591
I have literally never met anyone who fits this meme. Lots of friends taking bullshit degrees, but otherwise very frugal.

Mocha Latte Kreuigs are only $1 each and are pretty much on the same level, sometimes better even, than any of these coffee shop """lattes""". Add a bit of whip cream for $0.10 a whip to make it extra good.
>>
>>132131957

i dont understand, avacados are like 25 cents to 50cents a piece when in season, and like double that when not...how the fuck is that expensive when compared with a non nutritious luxury like starbucks...avacados are extremely healthy, thats the kind of thing we should be spending money on, not the empty calorie bomb that a 50gram of sugar starbucks coffee laced with high fat cream that costs $6 a day.

Or are they bitching about millennials going to a restaurant and spending $10 on avocado toast made for them when the net cost should be $75 cents?

Frivolous millennials is a false narrative made up by boomer kikes who want to trick people into believing they actually pay young people a decent wage.

>>
>>132133657
uh yeah actually it is
somebody else could open up a place and undercut the competition by 50% and still turn a fat ass profit margin but nobody does it so everybody willingly opens their butthole for $20 toast
>>
I just go through the self-checkout at the grocery store and ring up the large avocados as small avocados. The larges are triple the price of smalls while being about double the size.

I also make my own delicious bread.
>>
Ah, so it's avocados that have caused house prices to constantly rise.
>>
>>132133554
The reason is pretty simple: if you're going to make a point by using examples, don't use examples that prove you don't have a single clue what you're talking about.
Really the worst part was his "defense" against the attacks he received for the avocado toast example because that's how he showed he was full of shit. It basically went "yeah this redditard found out I got a $5k loan, but that's actually false because I'm a good goy just like you! You see, I got a small loan of $200k AND another one of $5k". What the fuck was he thinking?
>>
>>132133868
What logic is this? You're saying the consumer shouldn't be blamed since nobody's opening a place with 50% undercut, therefore the consumer should be blamed?
>>
>>132131957

what were housing prices relative to income?
What were inner cities like back then before the great dindu migration north and west?
nimbyism is a yuge problem, lots of zoning and ordinances to protect property values, prevents decent housing to alleviate prices combined with low interest speculation, combined with cities/states raising taxes to pay pensions/blaot bureaucracy.
But the meme continues
You just have to be motivated!...Boomers graduated high school went to factory job could easily afford house have children. They tried a lot harder...NOT.
If everyone is more motivated everyone simply works harder for the same wage same job but some cant so they drop out.
Not saying there is not a problem, but we've also done a lot better in other ways. young adults are not overleveraging themselves with second houses/cottages/boats/RV's etc. When they do have kids they are not beating their kids and less likely to be drunks and tries to be good parents(excluding dindus).
If everyone tries harder(look at 4 year uni college admission minimum SAT scores constantly rising)
>>
>>132134545

It's really because not every poor young person is poor because they are a White/Hispanic liberal college hippie who overvalues "cultured" products like fucking avocado on toast. Fuck, outside of that hippie culture crowd I don't know anybody with money problems who gets "fancy" with food. Most overspend on electronics and going out too often at shitty clubs and other nightlife shit.

So it's not a good line to start on. Wealthy, liberal millennials don't need this advice. In fact, they can use a good monetary kick in the face.
>>
>>132134561

Food is cheap in the third world. An avocado costs less than a dollar here. It's only in 1st world countries that food prices are retarded.
>>
>>132133800
That IS true. Just the fact that most of them cannot cook for shit, which means they eat out and waste ridiculous amount of money. If you are waving around smartphone, you are not frugal. If you don't cook your own food, you are not frugal. If you buy clothes more than twice a year then you are not frugal. If you go out more than twice a month then you are not frugal.
If you waste your money on gym card then you are not frugal. The same if you are in college and drive car. Or don't borrow books in library.
Thousand other tiny things that add up.

Reminder that we are talking about a generation that screams most about open borders, let them in, no human is illegal, they are just looking for better life etc. and then they turn around on the spot and start whining about high prices, no housing and low wages.

I sincerely hope the banks will rape them in the ass, niggers will rape them in mouth and they all starve to death.

The problem there is the assumption that buying a house is even entering their mind. It is.

Let me put this in terms even a boomer can understand: You're about to die, your bank account isn't going to do anything after you're dead, so you blow it all on vacations, luxuries, everything you've ever wanted to do.

Now that you've got a grip on that, realize that most millenials have already realized that financially, they are already dead.

Firstly, you must demonstrate that these are activities that people do. [citation needed].
Secondly, you must demonstrate that the amount of money used up in that process could go toward a house: simply showing that saving this amount of money for 10 years would allow them the downpayment for a local house that a median salary can pay off the mortgage on along with normal living conditions is enough. Until then, [citation needed].

That's not even taking into account the fact that you both think people should improve themselves physically and mentally like the average low-iq /pol/tard but also think they shouldn't go to the gym or have access to any weights in general.

Because it's no longer possible to save for a house, but luxuries have not grown in value orders of magnitude faster than salaries, thus are still just as affordable as before. Since your leftover money is now no longer viable, might as well use it on quality of life improvements. It's a perfectly rational position, even though one that obviously they're not following knowingly.

he's not a millionaire. during the peak of the american housing bubble the largest percentage of interest only loans held by any bank was 25%. one of the big 4 banks in australia is holding 50%.

during the peak of the american housing bubble the largest household income to house price ratio was about 15 times, in san francisco i believe. right now, melbourne and sydney are both above 30 times.

Agreed.

I recently went back to college to finish a masters and I would hang out with kids aged 19-25 all day everyday.

The number one problem ALL of them had was zero understanding of how to spend money.

The coffee thing, one of the guys I made friends with was 23. He was always borderline broke, needed everyone else to spot him money, and was totally strapped for cash when it came time to pay rent and bills, every month all year long. He did have a restaurant but he only worked around 20 hours a week, if that.

Despite not having money, he managed to have a coffee addiction that could only be quenched by $5 cups of coffee from Starbucks, usually buying them 3 or more times a day. In between those coffees he'd go with his other millennial friends to the French cafe or Chinese food place across the street and drop another $10-$15 on lunch or just a snack. And let's not even bring up the booze and pot he needs a constant supply of.

The guy is spending around $50 a day on bullshit, and he isn't the only one I'm seeing do it, he's just my example. Fucking all of these dumbshits are broke as hell but unable to see what they're throwing their money away on.

I make my money through stocks and real estate and I grew up in the 80's and 90's. I understand that there are things that you must have now that I didn't have to pay for back then. You're a hobo or a jackass if you think you can get through life without needing a cellphone and a computer now days and that includes paying for internet and a cellphone plan, upkeep and updates of those things, gas is more expensive, everything is more expensive and job pay has barely increased, BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR MONEY.

Spending money will give you things but having money gives you options. These fucking youngsters feel trapped because of their total lack of financial responsibility which leaves them with no options other than being enslaved in debt.
>>
>>132137203

This is exactly what I was talking about - you can have excellent physique if you work out using your natural body weight, do cardio or use replacements for the weights, like bottles full of sand or weighted bag.
You spend shitload for some overcrowded shitjoint, flailing on benchpress, while you won't manage to do fifty pushups and thirty bar pullups.

>you must demonstrate that these are activities that people do

Dude, come the fuck on. Go to any college group at random - frugal guy would stand up from the crowd like a sore thumb.
I recently met one who constantly whined about lack of money, and then she bought yoga lessons for the price of two average incomes.

I'm lmaoing at your life... everyone arguing over the price of fucking avocados.

I can't even look at a useful avocado for $0.50... maybe $3 on "sale."

It's like you're grasping at straws to avoid the point entirely... that you can't spend frivolously and expect to attain wealth.

Spending money on hipster toast, coffee, expensive clothes and accessories, new cars, whatever... If you aren't secure in your finances that's a waste of fucking money. If you want to drink $6 coffee and $10 beers, eat $20 toast and wear $200 jeans you aren't going to afford a house.

>>
>>132132355
the problem is the price of a single avocado, the kids he's referring to are not buying avocado in stores making the toasts themselves.. They're spending 15-30 euros at cafes whenever they get the chance!

Personally I have a fairly large income, so I can afford it... but one of my biggest expenses is cafe breakfast/lunch/brunch. I can afford saving anyways, but I have friends who spend the same amount of money as me on cafes but don't earn much money at all, I'm sure they have literally 0 savings and honestly if they'd make the toasts themselves and put the extra money in to a savings they'd be far better off.

Per week I spend approx 100 euros on eating out, that's 400 per month, we've been doing this for around 5 years now, that counts up to 24000 euros = enough for a decent house deposit.

Millenials are spending way too much money on eating out and while I'm one of them, I'm making enough to both eat out AND save but most people don't.

Future tradesman here. The problem is that this is just one alternative and if everyone actually were to follow this advice, then we'd ALL be fucked. The reason why trades are a viable option is because trades aren't like liberal arts degrees. If you have people flood into there like they are flooding into unis, now the only option is a 4 year UC degree (im in cali I dont know or care about the equivalent elsewhere) or post post college. >>
>>132131957

The problem is that people think the only way they can succeed is by getting a fancy sheet of paper by spending four years doing absolutely nothing. It doesn't occur to them that maybe success can come through climbing a position in a "shitty job", maybe invest in stocks, bitcoin, ethereum, maybe play the lottery every once in the while, maybe do under the table shit like sell weed, to really succeed is to get your hands "dirty". This old-fashioned "white picket fence" family doesn't exist anymore. at least not in the way it works.

That's why people are so miserable nowadays. They have this defeatist attitude because they're thinking like a boomer. They're not acting their "age". They are literally trying to be something they're not.

Its so tiring. I've been on my own since graduating from high school. Been homeless at one point and clawed my way up from living in the back of a kia hatchback. I'm fairly stable doing 14 hour days between a full time welding job and six hours warehousing but I'm tired all the time. I just dream that I might be able to actually start the life I wanted to live by the time I'm 25 (aka the age I can finally do FAFSA shit without including my parents income despite not having contact with my parents for years so then maybe college could be within my price range) or I'll have enough to put a downpayment on a house.

I'm still deciding if I should try and get a house and try and set up something for a hypothetical heir (because fuck knows I can't afford to go dating and save money) to have a better life with down the line or try and improve my own lot.

I fully expect to die before my 50's at this rate and my shotgun continuously feels more attractive. If nothing pans out by the time I'm 25, I'm going to kill myself.

This is called post-18th Century global economics. The only way to go back is to de-industrialize.

Buy to rent will be unprofitable to the average person shortly, the changes are phasing in from between this April and 2020:

>Higher-rate taxpayers can no longer offset all their mortgage interest against rental income before calculating the tax due. This will lead to higher tax bills even if investors have not seen their income increase.

>The reduction in relief is being phased in between now and 2020 and will be replaced by a 20pc tax credit. From this week landlords can offset only 75pc of their mortgage interest against their profits. This falls to 50pc next year, 25pc in 2019 and zero in 2020.

Don't worry though, you'll still have (((corporate landlords))) who will definitely be better than private British Citizens who can afford to buy two homes and rent one out to another British Citizen ;^)

Yeah, I think a lot of people like to be defeatist about everything and just cry about how hard the world is, nothing is their fault, there's nothing they could possibly do, etc.

Look, I get it...It sucks compared to what the boomers had. College is expensive, there's no factory jobs, savings accounts have shit yields. The young generation is really bad with money. If they lived withn an everydayman traditional budget they would be able to afford a starter house pretty early.

Eat out once a month. Drive a decent used car that will keep its value, don't have a computer and have a dumb phone.

When I had my first place I use to get books on tape and my wife and I would listen to them as we cleaned the house. We were also a whole lot more social compared to when we had a computer and a TV.

That is why people look back fondly on the times where they didn't have material distractions, they were maintaining social relationships.

Boomer meme. It's completely bullshit. I know a lot of kids, from all generations, and each one is no different from the other. "What I did when I was young" is meaningless and irrelevant, that world doesn't exist anymore. Housing prices weren't as insane as they are now when you were younger. The cost of living wasn't as high, back then you could actually get more than 1% on a savings account, and you cooked as little as they do, but everything was cheaper then.
Plus, the world YOUR generation created depends on them spending all of their money on $6 cups of coffee and spending $500k for cracker boxes in Oakland with bars on the window, so YOUR retirement is set. You created the world they have to live in, and you shit on them constantly and wag your fat, boomer finger at them, all the while living fat off the money you stole from their generation.
So just fuck off, already, m'kay? They'll be fine. They'll figure their shit out, just like you did, and just like every generation has since the dawn of mankind.

People in their 20's RARELY bought houses. That nonsense started at the tail end of the 90's, because the real estate vultures needed a new market to sell their overpriced shit shacks to.

For history, you're pretty much shit out of luck. The job market is pretty small, heavily saturated and requires quite a high level of education to make even a modest wage.

>I liked the practical aspects of engineering

If you are good at troubleshooting, you could look into becoming a field service technician. There's apprenticeship programs in a wide range of fields for a variety of companies. You'd travel a lot but, as a delivery driver, I'm assuming you don't mind that. After qualification, pay starts in the mid-low £20k range and goes up solidly with experience.

It is something of a limited career in terms of progression, there's no direct path to making huge amounts of money but you can always leverage the experience you glean or use your free time and money to study towards something that pays even better.

The Boomers are the ones leading the companies, outsourcing, giving good jobs to habib on an H1B, cuttings salaries to the bone, all so the fucking stock prices will stay up, because the Boomers went all in on their 401ks.

That world may not last long, now that the Boomers are dying off.

Most kids I know don't shop at Whole Foods, anyway. That's mostly Boomers and Gen X.

And you know, fuck this whole generational label thing, too - Boomers invented it, and we all know Boomers are fucktards. But you keep waving your shrivled little moralistic finger at the kids, who had shit to do with creating the world they have to live in.

I can tell you've been doing this for a while, you're very professional. Trying to make serious money from knowledge of history seems counter productive anyway. Somehow I think I'll be alright in the long run, regardless of what industry I eventually land in

You're probably in at least the 90th percentile of happy people. People are generally miserable about their work, relationships, etc. They chase crap to spend $$$$$ on as if they will finally be happy, nope, something else will come up!

No problem, best of luck.

Thanks awfully. It's ironic you say that, I'm the reason my employer now has a policy against wearing hiking shoes with a suit (it's not fair, they're so damn comfy).
