Where is the overton window in the modern west?
One the one hand you have communists and anarchists who actually think we're one step from fascism, and on the other far righters who think we're ruled by Marxists.

The thing is that both sides think they're fighting for freedom.
Freedom means different things to these groups.
Leftists meaning anyone from social Democrats, socialists, communists, left libertarians and left wing anarchists. Though depending on the specific ideology the answer changes generally leftists believe freedom is living without the oppression of the working class by capitalist wage labor and other capitalist means such as the small concentration of capital and private property. All right wing ideology has sought to protect private property rights.
Rightists meaning conservatives, right libertarians, minarchists, right wing anarchists, etc are in allot of ways allies or in the least "fellow travelers" to nationalists, fascists because all of these ideologies are anti-communist and seeking to protect private property rights. Their ideas of freedom are more varied but usually very similar ever since the emergence of the "alt-right". Capitalists generally worry more about the economic praxis of socialism while nationalists and fascists worry more about the social aspects of socialism. Capitalist idea of freedom is the market being free from intervention by the state. Nationalist and fascist freedom is usually of the group's respective race, country and or religion being being the dominant force in whatever desired category. Left wing ideologies are in conflict with these because they promote social and economic equality.
I'd say the overton window of the modern west is center-right liberalism/conservatism which is mostly neither here nor there. I think these groups mainly think the world is against them when in many ways that's true. Both ideas are radical and utopian in ways even though they're hundreds of years old. The status quo just wishes to maintain power over the masses in any way possible be it capitalist or socialist.
Elements of the far left are useful for ruling class, hard core far right fascist types represent the true threat to the established order imho and are hunted down and ostracized more, conventional party politics are kind of banal and pointless.
Most people don't have any skin in the game and can barely be arsed to attend local school board or even HOA meetings, "politics" are kind of a meme.
