That's the beach though, and the beating sun, but there's a lot of fair skinned people still, I can attest since I'm Algarvio.
Even then you can tell a Portuguese from a gypsy immediately because a Portuguese has natural light skin that can and will tan depending on how much sun they get while a gypsy is naturally a shade of brown and can only go darker.
I'm quite pale, always was and my school was quite diverse, and I'm talking actual diversity here not the liberal meme of all shades of brown.
Skin was always fair or tanned in the summer, hair color varied from shades of blonde, to brown to black, eye colors too varied from blue, green, hazel and brown.
