My buddy works as a Geratric Consultant and he said the reason the US' budget is fucked is because the life expectancy has outpaced what the laws were written to accomodate. Since 2000 alone life expectancy has gone up drastically, and these people are living longer, sucking up more benefits, and not contributing to society as they once did. It is not uncommon for someone to live to be 90+ which means they spend literally half their life NOT working (0-18 and 65+).

Absolutely no reason for a six year senator or representative to receive pension for the rest of his life even if he only serves one term. Military members literally put their lives on the line and have to do 20 years. At least just to get a pension at half the average rate of their base pay the past 36 months.
